DVD Sales: Squeakquel Win is Elemental

April 28, 2010

None of the new releases were able to reach the top five and only four were able to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart. This left Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in first place for the third week row as it sold an additional 263,000 units, lifting its running tally to 3.22 million units sold for $54.59 million total. Likewise, Sherlock Holmes remained in second place with 262,000 units / $4.45 million for the week for totals of 1.74 million units / $29.52 million after three. The Blind Side reached the 4 million unit milestone with 191,000 units over the week, lifting its total to 4.03 million units. The Twilight Saga: New Moon placed fourth during its fourth week of release, adding 122,000 units / $2.13 million over the week for totals of 6.37 million / $144.81 million. The Princess and the Frog returned to the top five with 93,000 units for the week and 3.60 million units for the month.

There were a trio of new releases to reach the top ten, starting with Crazy on the Outside in seventh place with 75,000 units / $1.13 million. Pirate Radio was right behind in eighth place with 54,000 units / $1.10 million, while the re-release of The Great Mouse Detective earned ninth place with 52,000 units / $773,000. The only other new release to chart was Tenderness, which opened well back in 24th place with 32,000 units / $683,000.

Blu-ray sales continued to slump as the selection of first-run releases has been particularly bad these past few weeks. Overall sales were down 15% from last week to $15.8 million, but that was still 46% higher than the same weekend last year. Compared to DVDs, Blu-rays represented 12% of the total market and 12% of the top 20 comparison. The best-selling Blu-ray of the week was Sherlock Holmes, which sold roughly 80,000 units.
