International Details: Another Milestone for Alice

May 16, 2010

The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.

For the fourth weekend in a row, Alice in Wonderland remained in second place, this time adding $13.28 million on 3843 screens in 54 markets for a total of $630.30 million internationally and $961.15 million worldwide. Since last week it has crossed the $600 million milestone on the international scene, making it just the 13th film to do so. It is now the seventh highest grossing film of all time. The film's per screen average has declined enough that it will likely shed screens and markets rather quickly. That said, if the worst thing you can say about a movie's box office run is, "It might not make it to $1 billion!" then the film is a massive success.

  • Ip Man 2 expanded further into Southeast Asia, rising to third place with $10.75 million on 731 screens in 7 markets for a total of $36.41 million. This includes sophomore stints in China and Hong Kong, but we don't have breakdowns for individual markets.
  • Clash of the Titans slipped a spot to fourth with $9.73 million on 5286 screens in 58 markets for a total of $293.91 million internationally and $451.91 million worldwide. It likely already has $300 million internationally, but we won't get the official numbers for a few days.
  • A Nightmare On Elm Street debuted in fifth place with $6.47 million on 1208 screens in 9 markets. The film actually managed to knock Iron Man 2 out of top spot in Russua with $2.74 million on 527 screens, while it managed just third place in the U.K. with $2.01 million on 354 screens. Next up for the film is France and Mexico. It has major openings throughout the entire summer.
  • Camping 2 rose a spot to sixth with $5.01 million on 799 screens in 3 markets for a total of $26.85 million after three weeks of release. In France it reclaimed the top spot, adding $4.26 million on 755 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $22.92 million.
  • How To Train Your Dragon moved in the other direction, but it still managed $4.90 million on 4056 screens in 54 markets for a total of $212.50 million internationally and $413.51 million worldwide. The film opens in South Korea next weekend and Japan next month, so it isn't done quite yet.
  • Date Night climbed a spot to eighth with $4.53 million on 2500 screens in 50 markets for a total of $41.61 million. It was aided by a third place, $770,000 opening on 222 screens in Italy, while it just missed the top five in Spain with $504,000 on 340 screens.
  • The Back-up Plan reached the chart for the first time, landing in ninth place with $4.43 million on 1317 screens in 23 markets over the weekend for a total of $6.74 million. It hasn't opened in too many major markets, but it hasn't done particularly well in those that it has opened in. For instance, this weekend it had a pair of fifth place debuts in both the U.K. ($1.06 million on 279 screens) and in Spain ($999,000 on 370 million).
  • Trick: The Movie - Psychic Battle opened in second place in Japan and tenth place internationally with $3.99 million on 320 screens.
  • Furry Vengeance entered the chart in 11th place with $3.71 million on 1090 screens in 6 markets for an early total of $6.28 million. It was unexpectedly strong in the U.K., earning $2.66 million on 428 screens. On the other hand, it only managed sixth place in Italy with $527,000 on 226 screens.
  • Badmaash Company opened in India and several other nations, earning $3.14 million on 1011 screens in 16 markets.
  • Another Indian film, Housefull, was right behind with $2.95 million on 855 screens in 16 markets for a total of $12.13 million.
  • The Last Song earned $2.77 million on 1279 screens in 15 markets for a total of $15.83 million. The film opened in a few markets, but they were mostly on the smaller side. For instance, it earned fourth place in Sweden with $117,000 on 21 screens.
  • L'amour, C'est Mieux à Deux opened in 15th place internationally and in third place in France with $2.72 million on 329 screens.
  • Dear John returned to the chart in 16th place with $2.53 million on 1263 screens in 25 markets for a total of $28.88 million. It opened in second place in Germany, but only managed $939,000 on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.16 million. In Italy it placed seventh with $452,000 on 201 screens.
  • Kick-Ass nearly fell off the chart with $2.44 million on 1663 screens in 30 markets for a total of $43.38 million. It could pop back onto the chart in the beginning of June when it debuts in Spain, but even if it doesn't, it has made more than enough money to keep the studio happy.
