Per Theater Chart: Agora Has Nothing to Fear from New Releases

Agora remained on top of the per theater chart with an average of $10,332 in four theaters. However, it is unlikely that it will expand wide, or even earn a real measure of mainstream success.

Agora was the only film to reach the $10,000 club, while the best the new limited releases could manage was an average of $7,185 by Rosencrantz and Guildenstein are Undead. Given the type of film, this is an amazing start and it could be a sign we have a cult hit on our hands. Rajneeti came pretty close to $1 million during its opening, earning an average of $6,857 in 124 theaters. Ondine performed quite well during its opening weekend with an average of $5,499 in five theaters. Speed Dating wasn't quite at that level, with $3,394 in one theater. Finding Bliss earned a reported $2,500 in one theater. Convention missed the Mendoza Line with a mere $1,220 in its lone theater. There's talk that there is an enthusiasm gap going into the 2010 midterm elections. I'm not saying this is proof of that, but it's not a good sign.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

• Exit Through the Gift Shop topped $2 million since this time last week, but $3 million might be out of reach.
• As expected, City Island made it all the way to $5 million. It might stick around for a couple more million, but this will be its last milestone.
