DVD Sales: Karate Chops Competition, But Beast Feeling Blu

October 19, 2010

Several films could claim to be the champion of the home market this week, including one of the many new releases. The Karate Kid opened on top of the DVD sales chart with 1.22 million units compared to Iron Man 2 with 1.10 million units. However, the latter topped the former in terms of consumer spending at $22.15 million to $20.80 million.

A Nightmare on Elm Street opened well back in third place with 277,000 units and $4.70 million. Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue is doing something almost no home market release does, it's showing strong legs. This week it was down just 35% to 248,000 units while it has now sold 1.55 million units generating $28.87 million in revenue. Bones: Season Five rounded out the top five with 197,000 units, but it was third in terms of revenue at $7.69 million.

Splice opened in eighth place with 137,000 units / $2.46 million, which is disappointing compared to its reviews, but in line with its theatrical run, more or less. The Human Centipede opened in 17th place with 48,000 units / $723,000, which is impressive for a limited release.

After Iron Man 2 came out last week, it would have been fine if the overall sales were to drop this week, but that wasn't the case as they rose 5% to $53.8 million, which was up 65% more than last year and it was 21% of total home market sales.

The best selling Blu-ray of the week was Beauty and the Beast at nearly 3 million units, it topped the combined DVD and Blu-ray sales of Iron Man 2. However, that was a Blu-ray / DVD combo pack so there are some mitigating circumstances and it might not be entirely fair to use this to judge the format as a whole. The second best selling Blu-ray was Iron Man 2 with close to 1 million units, while The Karate Kid opened in third place with over 500,000 units sold.
