International Box Office: Getting Active

October 27, 2010

Mirroring its domestic debut, Paranormal Activity 2 opened in first place internationally with $22.32 million on 2752 screens in 21 markets. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $5.92 million on 389 screens, while it also topped the charts in Australia with $2.68 million on 185 screens and in Mexico with $1.86 million in 452. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in South Korea with $1.05 million on 218 screens over the weekend and $1.18 million in total. While in Italy it could do no better than fourth place with $1.55 million on 250.

Despicable Me was pushed into second place, but it still earned $20.63 million on 4552 screens in 44 markets for a total of $199.27 million internationally and $446.79 million worldwide. The film remained in top spot in Germany with $3.01 million on 697 screens over weekend for a total of $21.60 million after four. It slipped to second place in the U.K. with $4.07 million on 549 screens over the weekend and $11.93 million after two. It remained in second in Italy with $3.62 million on 540 screens for a total of $9.85 million, also after two. I have a very hard time imagining any scenario where it didn't cross $200 million on Monday. Add its opening in Japan, coming this weekend, and it could reach $500 million worldwide very shortly.

There was a huge drop-off on the chart with The Social Network repeating in third place with $9.95 million on 2130 screens in 23 markets for a total of $32.15 million. It had no major market openings this weekend, but in the U.K. it did add $2.41 million on 399 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.43 million after two.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps climbed to fourth place with $9.62 million on 4131 screens in 53 markets for a total of $62.48 million after a month of release. The film opened in third place in a trio of major markets led by Germany at $2.14 million on 353 screens over the weekend and $2.32 million in total. In Italy it made $1.55 million on 324 screens, while in South Korea it pulled in just $819,000 on 334 screens over the weekend and $985,000 in total.

Little White Lies debuted in first place in its native France with $8.72 million on 555 screens, while adding in the two other French-speaking markets and it placed fifth internationally with $9.61 million on 594 screens.

Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole earned $8.42 million on 4151 screens in 49 markets for a total of $55.53 million, which is more than it has made domestically, but still soft given its production budget. It opened in third place in Spain with $1.09 million on 323 screens, while it only managed fifth place in the U.K. with $1.16 million on 472.

Eat Pray Love fell from second to seven with $8.25 million on 3247 screens in 66 markets for a total of $100.50 million. With no major openings ahead, it will quickly drop off this list, but it could still hit $200 million worldwide before it is done.

Life As We Know It reached the chart for the first time in its run with $8.00 million on 2336 screens in 22 markets for a total of $18.25 million after just three weeks of release. The film opened in second place in Australia with $2.03 million on 229 screens and fourth in Germany with $2.05 million on 403.

Red is also very early in its international run adding $6.95 million on 1591 screens in 15 markets for a total of $14.84 million. The big opening of the weekend came in the U.K., where it placed third with $2.61 million on 402 screens.

The Town rounded out the top ten with $5.70 million on 1754 screens in 29 markets for a total of $35.15 million. Its only major market opening of the weekend came in Russia, but it only managed sixth place with $830,000 on 292 screens. On the other hand, it placed third during its second weekend in Australia adding $1.48 million on 226 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.20 million after two.
