Weekend Estimates: Bieber and Sandler Neck-and-Neck

February 13, 2011

Justin Bieber's popularity may not be restricted to Twitter after all.

This weekend's box office race is too close to call on Sunday morning after Justin Bieber: Never Say Never posted an impressive $30.26m opening weekend, enough to put it within striking distance of Just Go With It for top spot. The Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy is pegged at $31m by Sony Pictures, which makes it the favorite to win, but a 2% difference between the two films means that Bieber could still take the title if fans turn out in greater numbers than expected today.

This weekend's box office total will be down again from last year thanks to an unfavorable comparison with Valentine's Day, The Wolf Man and Percy Jackson. That will be the 14th consecutive down weekend for the industry.

Among the other openers this weekend, Gnomeo and Juliet did fairly well for Disney, picking up an estimated $25.5 million from 2,994 theaters. The Eagle was softer for Focus Features with $8.6 million from 2,296. Cedar Rapids had a great limited debut for Fox Searchlight, averaging over $20,000 in 15 theaters for an estimated opening of $310,789. That was even better than Vidal Sassoon: The Movie, which earned over $14,000 in a single theater for Phase 4 Films.
