Four Hops to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

April 5, 2011

The Four Times led a group of three films that topped the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this week with $16,192 in its lone theater. My Perestroika was next with $13,498, also in one theater. Meanwhile, the overall box office leader, Hop, was the final member of the $10,000 club with an average of $10,490.

The only other new limited release to even come close to that mark was In A Better World with an average of $8,265 in four theaters. Circus wasn't bad in its opening, scoring $5,403 in one theater. Queen to Play and Super were in a relatively close race with averages of $4,682 and $4,232 respectively. While Queen led on the per theater chart, Super was playing in significantly more theaters at eleven to six, so that is a mitigating factor. Rubber earned an average of $3,269 in five theaters, which is middling, at best. However, the film is perhaps just too bizarre to find an audience in theaters. It is about a murderous, psychic tire after all. Trust and Wrecked were in a virtual tie at $2,079 and $2,054. Had the latter sold just four more tickets, it could have won that race. On the other hand, it wouldn't have been a major victory, as neither film topped the Mendoza Line by any real margin. The Last Godfather missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,757, but it was playing in 58 theaters, which is far too many for a film like this. Likewise, Cat Run was playing in more than 100 theaters, which partially explains its average of just $295. It was also hurt by bad reviews.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Win Win continues to expand as it earned more than $1 million over the weekend and therefore crossed its first milestone. (It topped $2 million on Monday.)
  • Jane Eyre also made more than $1 million over the weekend alone and that helped it reach $3 million in total.
