International Box Office: Just Barely Winning

April 6, 2011

Just Go With It reached first place on the international chart with $10.84 million on 2,791 screens in 40 markets for a total of $76.26 million after 8 weeks of release. It opened in first place in Australia with $2.44 million on 311 screens, but it struggled in Italy with just $732,000 on 248. So far the film has $9.09 million in Russia after just two weeks, including $2.87 million on 544 screens this past weekend.

Battle: Los Angeles was right behind with $10.33 million on 5,991 screens in 54 markets for a total of $96.11 million. The only major market debut this weekend came in Spain where it opened in first place with $2.72 million on 360 screens. It will have no trouble getting to $100 million by this time next weekend and with debuts in Germany and Italy ahead, $200 million worldwide is almost assured. On a side note, the film crossed $30 million in China alone, a feat that is impressive by itself. However, it is also worth noting that when it opened in that market, it was playing on almost 4000 screens. In comparison, there are just shy of 40,000 screens in the United States and only the widest of the wide releases open on 8000 or more screens. China is already a major market and as the economy there grows, it could become the most important international market

Sucker Punch climbed into third place with $8.80 million on 3,041 screens in 36 markets for two-week total of $16.22 million. It opened in a quartet of major markets scoring first place in Germany with $1.59 million on 433 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.83 million. In France the film had to settle for second place, but earned $2.41 million on 451 screens, while it only managed fourth place in Russia, there was a lot of competition and its opening of $2.01 million on 741 screens was relatively strong compared to the size of the market. It also managed fourth place in the U.K., but with only $1.31 million on 392, which is about the same as $6 million to $8 million here.

Rango hit $100 million over the weekend with $8.80 million on 4,505 screens in 47 markets for a total $104.29 million. No major market openings hurt, but the film remained in first place in France with $2.69 million on 633 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.49 million after two.

Hop made its international debut in fifth place with $6.45 million on 2,395 screens in 24 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $6.67 million. It opened in first place in the U.K. with $2.24 million on 476 screens. On the other hand, it struggled in both Germany ($857,000 on 556) and Italy ($651,000 on 333). With a better than expected domestic opening, the film won't need huge international numbers to break even, but this is still troubling.

No major market openings also hurt Gnomeo and Juliet, as it fell to $5.43 million on 2,989 screens in 24 markets for a total of $72.9 million internationally.

The King's Speech is coasting on holdovers, but still added $5.34 million on 3,108 screens in 45 markets to its running tally, which now sits at $256.95 million internationally. Worldwide it has $393.54 million and should get to $400 million in about two weeks time.
