DVD Sales: Blood Truly Impressive

June 14, 2011

It's not common for a TV on DVD release to top the sales chart, but that's what True Blood: Season Two did. It led all new releases and holdovers during its first week of release with 786,000 units, and generated $23.92 million in consumer spending at retail. To put this into perspective, Season Two took about a month to sell that many units. Gnomeo and Juliet finished in second place with 233,000 units / $3.73 million for the week giving it totals of 904,000 units / $14.56 million after two. Drive Angry opened in third place with 187,000 units / $2.64 million. Considering how much it struggled theatrically, this isn't a bad start, but that's damning it with faint praise. Coincidentally, I Am Number Four fell to fourth place with 152,000 units / $2.44 million for the week and 618,000 units / $9.94 million after two. Meanwhile, Tangled remains stuck in the top five selling an additional 106,000 units, that pushed its total to 6.03 million after ten weeks of release. It is the first DVD released in 2011 to reach 6 million units. And with a running tally of $92.47 million, it should become the first to reach $100 million in sales.

Psych: Season Five debuted in 11th place with 75,000 units / $2.62 million, which is impressive for TV on DVD. The last new release to chart was Biutiful in 20th place with 45,000 units / $818,000.

While there were no other new releases to chart, there were a couple of entrants of note. Not only did True Blood's latest season top the chart, it helped boost Season Two into sixth place with 84,000 units / $1.85 million for the week for totals of 1.34 million units / $45.33 million. Season One landed in 14th place with 59,000 units / $1.19 million for the week giving it totals of 2.19 million / $72.82 million.
