International Box Office: Panda Doesn't Pull Any Punches

June 15, 2011

Kung Fu Panda 2 climbed into top spot on the international chart after three weeks of release, earning $56.72 million on 11,867 screens in 45 markets for a total of $206.11 million internationally and $332.92 million worldwide. This past weekend the film debuted in a number of major markets, led by the U.K. where it made $10.07 million on 514 screens, but while this was enough for first place in the market, it was less than the original made. On the other hand, it showed growth in Mexico with $7.34 million on 1,841 screens over the weekend and a total opening of $14.69 million, and in Brazil with $4.79 million on 714 screens over the weekend and $5.18 million in total. The film opens in France and Germany next weekend and Japan and Italy in August, so it still has quite a way to go before its international run is over.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was pushed into second place, but was still very strong over the weekend with $42.75 million on 14,218 screens in 67 markets. This lifted its totals to $679.76 million internationally and $888.63 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers from now on, but it still has a shot at $1 billion worldwide. Granted, it's a bit of a long shot, but it has a shot.

X-Men: First Class was right behind with $41.82 million on 10,573 screens in 66 markets for a two-week total of $123.91 million. The film only managed third place during its debut in Germany with $2.34 million on 610 screens, while it was even weaker in Japan landing in fourth place with $1.97 million on 523. On the other hand, it topped the chart in Italy with $1.40 million on 522 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.92 million. Holdovers were led by France where it added $4.67 million on 687 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $12.87 million.

The Hangover 2 earned fourth place with $38.49 million on 6,316 screens in 54 markets for a total of $214.36 million internationally and $430.09 million worldwide. It has now topped the original's international final, while by this time next week it will do the same worldwide. The film's biggest market of the weekend was Germany, where it added $7.78 million on 639 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.08 million after two. However, its biggest market overall is the U.K., where it has $43.14 million after three weeks of release, including $4.49 million on 467 this past weekend.

Super 8 opened in fifth place with $6.72 million on 777 screens in 9 markets. The film's only major market was Australia, where it debuted in third place with $2.73 million on 380 screens. Since it is not a sequel or a remake or based on a famous novel, the film doesn't have a built in audience, so it could have better legs, as it doesn't have to worry about the Fanboy Effect. That said, it is far too soon to predict where it will end up.
