International Box Office: Competition Can't Touch Twilight

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 remained in top spot on the international chart with $76 million on 10,500 screens in 68 markets for a total of $268 million internationally and $489 million worldwide. It has already topped the first film in the franchise and by the end it should improve upon the franchise's international average. Its best new market was Germany, at $10.89 million on 789 screens over the weekend, for a total opening of $13.70 million. Meanwhile, its best holdover was the U.K., where it added $7.11 million on 546 screens to its two-week total, which sits at $36.24 million.

Intouchables rose to second place with $16.01 million on 785 screens in 3 markets for a total of $83.70 million. Of that, $77.91 million has been earned in its native France, including $14.68 million on 722 screens over the past weekend. It should top $100 million in the market, which is like earning $600 million domestically.

Immortals remained in third place with $13.9 million over the weekend for a total of $91.0 million after three. By this time next week, it will be at $100 million internationally, while it should get to $200 million worldwide in the end. This should be enough to show a profit by its initial push into the home market.

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn fell to fourth place with $12.57 million on 11,975 screens in 51 markets for a total of $207.74 million internationally after a month of release. The biggest market of the weekend was China, where it made $3 million giving it a two-week total of $14.5 million. Its biggest market overall is France, where it has $41.88 million, including $1.02 million on 557 screens this past weekend.

Arthur Christmas returned to the chart in fifth place with $12.37 million on 4,037 screens in 24 markets for a total of $22.77 million. Its biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $3.93 million on 474 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.51 million after two. On the other hand, it had a trio of soft openings in major markets. It earned third place in South Korea with $1.28 million on 413 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.34 million. It had to settle for fourth place in France with $1.49 million on 475 and in Australia with $1.35 million on 420 over the weekend and $1.42 million in total.

Puss In Boots rose to sixth place with $10.43 million on 1,599 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $64.22 million after a month of release. It opened in eight markets, but they were mostly the smaller variety. The biggest exception was Spain, where it topped the chart with $5.33 million on 675 screens. It also opened in Mexico, but only in limited release. It still managed to reach the top ten with $239,000 on 211.

Happy Feet Two reached the chart for the first time with $10.4 million on 3,700 screens in 27 markets, for an early total of $14.4 million. It opened in Brazil with $1.53 million on 362, which was enough for second place, but still disappointing. It Italy, it only managed fourth place with $1.23 million on 409 screens. It bombed outright in Japan with just $696,000 on 465.
