International Box Office: Major Milestone for Mission

January 5, 2012

Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol remained in first place on the international chart with $45.86 million on 7,342 screens in 50 markets for a total of $227.01 million internationally and $359.42 million worldwide. This includes a first place, $12.77 million opening on 509 screens in the U.K. It had to settle for second place in Mexico with $1.32 million on 1,065 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.64 million and in Brazil with $1.04 million on 501 screens over the weekend and a total opening of $6.02 million. The film has almost caught up with Mission: Impossible: III and is closing in on the average for the franchise.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows shot into second place with $34 million in 45 markets for a total of $106 million after three weeks of release. The film opened in first place in Russia with $6.4 million on 1,170 screens, in Germany with $3.21 million on 636 screens and $9.71 million in total, and Mexico with $2.03 million on 1,171 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.59 million.

Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rose to third place with $24.11 million on 6,613 screens in 57 markets for a total of $80.83 million. Granted, it is still early in the film's run, but it is behind the pace of the previous installments. It opened in second place in France with $4.77 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $11.10 million.

Puss In Boots fell to fourth place with $20.96 million on 5,701 screens in 43 markets for totals of $274.51 million internationally and $420.00 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers at the moment. It opens in Scandinavia at the end of January / beginning of February, while it ends its run in Japan in March.

The Flowers Of War remained potent with $20.95 million in China giving it $77.54 million in that market after just three weeks of release. It should get to $100 million shortly.

The Flying Swords Of Dragon's Gate was in sixth place with $18.69 million in three markets over the weekend for a running tally of $69.71 million, most if which came from China. It too should reach $100 million, especially if it finds an audience outside its native market.

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn shot back onto the chart in seventh place with $11.36 million on 2,624 screens in 78 markets for a total of $249.03 million internationally and $296.51 million worldwide. The film debuted in Australia in first place with $3.02 million on 450 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.10 million. It also debuted in Mexico, but struggled earning third place with $658,000 on 837 screens over the weekend and $2.08 million in total.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was further down the list earning tenth place with $8.30 million on 1,515 screens in 15 markets for a total of $12.18 million. It opened in the U.K. in second place with $6.74 million on 479 screens. It opened in first place in Sweden with $473,000 on 172 screens over the weekend and $2.78 million since Boxing Day.

One last note, Don 2 held on relatively strongly with $7.54 million over the weekend for a total of $30.38 million after two. This is excellent for an Indian film and I'm looking forward to hearing about more 3-D Bollywood films.
