International Box Office: Ghost Rises Again

February 1, 2012

It was a good weekend for Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. It crossed $200 million domestically and jumped back to first place on the international chart with $25.23 million on 6,411 screens in 56 markets. It now has $369.37 million internationally and $571.93 million worldwide, which is the best in the franchise. The film earned first place with $12.7 million on 3000 screens in China, but had to settle for second place in Italy with $3.01 million on 575. It will quickly cross $600 million worldwide, even though it has no more major markets left to open in.

Agneepath opened in second place with $18.55 million, which is a huge opening for an Indian film. With the $1.2 million it made domestically, it has nearly $20 million worldwide.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows fell to third place with $17.3 million in 7,300 screens in 58 markets for totals of $287.1 million internationally and $469.3 million worldwide. It debuted in first place in France with $6.92 million on 620 screens, which is better than Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol's opening in this market. At this point, A Game of Shadows will have no trouble topping the original internationally, while if it is a huge hit in Japan next month, it could top its predecessor worldwide as well.

The Descendants jumped onto the international chart for the first time earning fourth place with $15.95 million on 2,526 screens in 33 markets for a still early total of $27.86 million. The film's biggest opening came in the U.K. where it placed second with $2.82 million on 403 screens, while it also managed second place in France with $1.88 million on 235. It had to settle for third place in Germany with $1.35 million on 248 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.50 million. In Brazil, the film only managed fifth place with $1.04 million on 151 screens, but its per screen average was the best in the top ten there.

Underworld: Awakenings added $15.14 million on 4,169 screens in 47 markets for a total of $40.26 million. It debuted in first place in Australia with $2.84 million on 214 screens and in Mexico with $2.12 million on 593. It had to settle for second in Spain with $2.04 million on 525. It held on well in Russia down 55% to $2.68 million on 721 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.22 million after two weeks of release. No Underworld film has reached $100 million internationally, but this film could be first.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is closing in on $100 million internationally with $11.19 million on 4,405 screens in 60 markets for a total of $87.12 million. Its only major market opening of the weekend was in Brazil, where it placed fourth with $1.14 million on 245 screens. It has yet to open in Japan and Italy, and when it does, it will have more than $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide.

Intouchables continues its amazing run with $10.04 million on 1,754 screens in 6 markets for a total of $196.17 million. This isn't the biggest French film of all time, but it is close. So far it has made $149.68 million in its native market, including $1.84 million on 793 screens this past weekend.

A couple of Hong Kong films were next with The Viral Factor placing eighth with $9.61 million over the weekend for a total opening of $18.04 million and All's Well Ends Well placing ninth with $7.96 million over the weekend for a total opening of $10.82 million. Like many films from that region of the world, numbers for individual markets were not released.
