International Box Office: Journey Around the World

February 22, 2012

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island remained on top of the international chart with $27.5 million on 8,249 screens in 43 markets for a total of $130.0 million internationally. By comparison, its predecessor made $140 million in total. This week, The Mysterious Island opened in second place in France with $2.71 million on 436 screens, while it managed first place in Spain with $2.10 million on 468. The film is almost at $200 million worldwide, and with several major markets left to go, it should have no trouble getting to $250 million and maybe even $300 million.

Love, a Chinese romantic comedy starring, among others, Shu Qi, opened in second place with $17.55 million in three markets. Like many films from this area of the world, breakdown by market is unavailable.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opened in third place with $12.83 million on 2,675 screens in 16 markets for a total opening of $13.18 million. It opened in third place in both the U.K. ($2.12 million on 362 screens) and in France ($1.84 million on 356). It placed second in Mexico with $1.62 million on 728, which is a better result given the relative size of these markets. So far the film is behind the Ghost Rider's pace in all three markets, by a pretty wide margin in some cases.

This Means War was right behind with $11.22 million on 1,936 screens in 16 markets. The film opened in first place in Russia with $4.55 million on 1,049 screens over the weekend with a total opening of $5.94 million, but it had to settle for second place with $2.11 million on 242 screens over the weekend for a total opening of 3.14 million. It's too soon to tell how well the film will do overall.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D held on better internationally than it did domestically, earning fifth place with $10.44 million on 4,530 screens in 62 markets for a total of $37.57 million during its release. In total, the film has $530.77 million internationally and $995.70 million worldwide. It will soon become just the 11th film to reach $1 billion and should end its run in the top ten all time.

The Woman in Black climbed to sixth place with $9.23 million on 1,652 screens in 8 markets for an early total of $25.09 million. Since the film only cost about $23 million to make, this is an excellent early run. Most of the film's box office has come from the U.K., where it added $5.55 million on 433 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.63 million after two. This weekend, it opened in second place in Spain with $1.30 million on 308 screens, which is on the disappointing side.
