DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 28th, 2012

February 27, 2012

There are not a lot of new releases this week, but it includes four-time Oscar winner Hugo. The DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Blu-ray Combo are clearly contenders for Pick of the Week, but so is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Friendship Express. I'm going with the former, but it is close.

Answers to Nothing - Buy from Amazon
This DVD arrived unannounced on my desk last week, but with the Oscars and the monthly preview due on Thursday, I just didn't have time, so I'm punting it over to the prize pool.

Anthony Bourdain: A Cook's Tour - Buy from Amazon
A six-disc, 35-episode DVD with Anthony Bourdain travelling around the world eating the local cuisine. Anthony Bourdain is one of the best food hosts out there and for fans of his, this DVD is a must have. Even if you are just a fan of food shows in general, it is worth picking up.

Beneath the Darkness - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned zero positive reviews and missed the Mendoza Line during its opening in limited release. It will make more on the home market, but mainly because it would be nearly impossible to make less.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Buccaneer, How the Universe Work, I Melt With You, Mandrill, Princess Jellyfish: The Complete Series, Runaway Jury, Scarlet Street, Vanya on 42nd Street (Criterion Collection), and WWE: Royal Rumble 2012
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases, but How the Universe Works or Vanya on 42nd Street are certainly worth checking out.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Hugo
Only one 3D release coming out this week, but it's Hugo, the best movie from 2011 that I reviewed.

Bounty Hunters - Buy from Amazon
One of a few films I might get a chance to review, but the screener hasn't arrived yet. I've read a few mixed reviews with most people complimenting Trish Stratus and her ability to kick ass and look good while doing it, while pointing out the rest of the film is rather weak.

Breakout Kings: Season One - Buy from Amazon
Cops work with criminals. This time it's members of the U.S. Marshalls working with criminals to capture escaped prisoners. Its reviews are only mixed, so unless you are a fan of this genre, it's safe to give it a pass. There are just too many other options out there.

Celtic Thunder: Voyage - Buy from Amazon
Celtic music has been surprisingly popular for a number of years, but I'm still shocked when a DVD places on the front page of the best selling new releases on Amazon.com.

Here Come The Brides: Season Two - Buy from Amazon
This TV on DVD release is on the front page of this week's new releases on Amazon.com. That means it's the 12th best selling new release of the week. A TV show that ran for just two seasons forty years ago is in 12th place. Granted, this could just be a temporary anamoly, but it does show how shallow the week is for new releases.

Here's Lucy: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
Lucille Ball's final hit TV show is nearing its end on the home market. The show earned two Golden Globe nominations for its star, but didn't earn as many awards as The Lucy Show or I Love Lucy.

Hugo - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Blu-ray Combo
After winning four Oscars on Sunday, this film comes out on the home market on Tuesday. Is it really one of the best films of the year? And is it worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Johnny English Reborn - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The original Johnny English earned bad reviews and failed to make much of an impact here. So why did they make a sequel? Simple. The film made more than $100 million internationally. This film earned reviews that were roughly the same level as before, but it bombed hard. That said, there could be another installment, because it made $150 million internationally. If you liked the first film, this one is also worth checking out, but if you didn't like the first one, this one won't change your mind. Also coming out this week is Johnny English on Blu-ray.

Justice League: Doom - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
D.C. Comics have not had a lot of success in theaters recently. Outside of Batman, there have been more misses than hits at the box office for many, many years. On the other hand, their DVD releases have been very good. Fans waiting for a really good Justice League theatrical release will at least be able to enjoy these movies.

King of Triads - Buy from Amazon
The execution of the old boss sets off a fight for who will control the gang, with the daughter of the old boss on one side and the boss's trusted lieutenant on the other. It's not a unique setup, but we are more concerned about the action. So are the fights enough to keep your attention? Perhaps even exciting enough to warrant purchasing the DVD? Read our review to find out.

Law & Order: Season Ten - Buy from Amazon
One of several long, long, long running TV shows with a DVD release coming out this week. Either you are a fan and know all about it, or you don't care about it.

Midsomer Murders, Set 19 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
After these many DVD releases, I've run out of things to talk about. It's a great British murder mystery series and as long as you consider it a series of TV movies instead of TV on DVD, it is worth picking up.

Mission: Impossible - The '89 TV Season - Buy from Amazon
I was a fan of the original series from the 1960 and 1970s, but can the updated version of the show from the late 1980s live up to its predecessor? Check out our review for my opinion.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Friendship Express - Buy from Amazon
So, this is my first taste of the latest incarnation of My Little Pony. Will I be converted into the legion of Bronies? Read our review to find out.

Myth of the American Sleepover - Buy from Amazon
I might get a screener for this film, but so far it is late. It did earn excellent reviews, so I'm looking forward to watching it.

Nickelodeon Favorites: Dance to the Music - Buy from Amazon
The latest mixed DVD from Nickelodeon includes the first episode of Bubble Guppies to come out on DVD. How is the show and is the DVD worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Todd & The Book Of Pure Evil: The Complete First Season - Buy from Amazon
I'm really looking forward to reviewing this TV on DVD release, but the screener is late and with this studio, that usually means it will never arrive. I've read some excellent reviews and it seems to have a tone that just fits with my particular idiosyncrasies.

Tomorrow When The War Began - Buy from Amazon
This film opened in limited release on Friday, but it failed to attract an audience. This is partially because its reviews were good and not great, but mainly because it was coming out on DVD just a few days later. It should do better on the home market, especially given the short turnaround time, but it still won't be a big hit. Fortunately, it made a lot of money in its native Australia, enough to warrant two sequels.

Top Gear: Season 17 - DVD or Blu-ray
A British TV show celebrating all things automotive. It's been around so long it is hard to say anything more about it.
