DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 6th, 2012

March 6, 2012

The number of big releases coming out this week can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The biggest theatrical release of the week is Immortals, but its reviews were weak enough that I think it might struggle on the home market in comparison. There are also a few catalog titles coming out on Blu-ray that are note-worthy, like To Catch a Thief. However, by far the biggest release, and the best, is Game of Thrones: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, the latter of which is the Pick of the Week with To Catch a Thief not too far behind.

Adventure Time: It Came From the Nightosphere - Buy from Amazon
This a great show and the price per minute isn't bad for this type of show. That said, with the number of adults who watch this show, they should release full season sets instead. Or do what they do with SpongeBob; I.E., release single-disc DVDs and full season sets. For some people, that would double the amount of money the studio would make.

Barbie in a Mermaid Tale - Buy from Amazon
This popular franchise continues its run on the home market. I would be surprised if it didn't reach the top ten in sales for the week.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 9 1/2 Weeks, 54, Agatha Christie's Poirot, Series 3, Aquamarine, Benji, The Blues Brothers, Columbus Circle, The Deer Hunter, Despicable Me, Disclosure, Evil Roy Slade & Brother's O'Toole, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, Kevin Smith Triple Feature, The Little Shop Of Horrors, Man from Snowy River, Meet the Parents, Meeting Spencer, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Nutty Professor, Out of Africa, Over Hawaii, Parenthood, Plan 9 From Outer Space, Recoil, Reindeer Games, Striptease, Thumbelina, Tony Bennett: Duets II: The Great Performances, and The Town
There's quite a list of secondary Blu-ray releases, many of which I could get screeners to review. I'm really looking forward to some of these, including Holy Grail, but I'm a little worried all of them will show up the same day and while trying to get all the reviews done, my head will explode.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Immortals
Only on 3D release this week, but it is a film aimed at the right demographic for early adapters.

Dalziel & Pascoe: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
A British Murder Mystery show that ran from 1996 to 2007. There are so many of these shows, that I can't keep them separate in my mind.

DeadHeads - Buy from Amazon
A movie about two slacker zombies who don't want to eat brains, but instead want to drink beer. When one of them finds an engagement ring in his pocket, he realizes he must have been on his way to his girlfriend to propose, so the two of them head out to find out where she is to see if romance can survive being zombified.

Footloose - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I am not a fan of the original Footloose, but I hear good things about the remake. Is it better? And is it better by a significant enough margin to be worth checking out? Read our review for my opinion.

The Fresh Beat Band - Buy from Amazon: Season One and Season Two
I normally get Nickelodeon releases, so I'm not sure why the screeners for these two DVDs didn't arrive. Maybe they will get here late.

Game of Thrones: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show is considered one of the best new shows of 2011. Now that it is out on DVD and Blu-ray, will I also heap praise on it? And is the DVD / Blu-ray release worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Grave of the Fireflies - Buy from Amazon
An early film by Studio Ghibli. Like nearly every film made by that studio, it earned incredible reviews thanks to its amazing writing and emotional story. (It tells the story of two homeless orphans living in Japan during World War II.) It's a must have for fans of Anime and if you are not a fan, this movie might convert you.

Hawthorne: The Complete Third Season - Buy from Amazon
It's a bittersweet week for fans of this show. The third season is coming out on DVD, but it is the final season.

Immortals - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack
This movie was pure style over substance, and for most critics, this was not enough. It is a genre that it getting more and more attention in theaters and on TV, so fans will have more options to choose from. If you are interested in seeing the movie, the Blu-ray does have a lot more extras than the DVD, while the 3-D version costs the same as the Blu-ray, at least it does on Amazon.com at the moment.

Jack and Jill - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This movie was awful, even compared to Adam Sandler's career average and should be avoided by all.

Jillian Michaels Kickbox FastFix - Buy from Amazon
A workout DVD is in the top ten according to Amazon.com. That's proof it is a slow week.

Like Crazy - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones star as two people in love, but who are separated because of an immigration issue. Is this a compelling enough setup for a movie? Read our review for my opinion.

The Lion King 1 1/2 - Buy from Amazon - DVD or Blu-ray
The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The screeners for these releases are on the way and I will get to the reviews ASAP.

Mercenaries - Buy from Amazon
A direct-to-DVD action film. There are a ton of those that come out every week. Can this one stand out? Read our review for my opinion.

Mi-5: Volume 10 - Buy from Amazon
This show is no longer at its peak, but it is still worth watching.

NFL Super Bowl XLVI Champions: 2011 New York Giants - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Real fans want full games and not two hours of highlights from the season.

Senna - Buy from Amazon
One of the best documentaries released last year. Some thought it was the clear favorite for the Oscar, but in the end it wasn't even nominated. Still, fans of the genre or auto racing should pick it up.

The Skin I Live In - Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
This film earned excellent reviews and despite its bizarre subject matter, it was able to earn $3 million in limited release. It is worth checking out and even with limited special features, it is worth picking up. That is, if you don't mind the strange subject matter.

Strawberry Shortcake - Buy from Amazon: Berry Brick Road and Bloomin' Berry Garden
The screeners for these two releases just arrived this afternoon. I will get to the reviews ASAP.

To Catch a Thief - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
It's a great time to be an Alfred Hitchcock fan with several of his films coming out on Blu-ray recently. How does this film compare to some of the others, both in terms of the quality of the film and its Blu-ray debut? Check out our review to find out.

Tooth Fairy 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I might get a copy of this movie to review. However, since I disliked the original, I'm not looking forward to seeing it.

Transformers: Prime: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest Transformers TV series gets its first full season release. Can it keep up the high quality from Darkness Rising? Read our review for my opinion.

VeggieTales: Robin Good & His Not So Merry Men - Buy from Amazon
Larry the Cucumber plays Robin Hood in the latest Veggie Tales DVD. I'm disappointed that the movies didn't do very well at the box office, because this is a fun series.
