Not too long ago, I reviewed a Nickelodeon mixed series DVD, Dance to the Music. One of the shows featured was Bubble Guppies, which was making its DVD debut on that release. This week, it has its first solo release, simply called Bubble Guppies.
Before we get into the individual episodes, since this is the first full DVD, we should talk about the show in general. Bubble Guppies is a sketch comedy show for preschoolers featuring a number of mermaids called Bubble Guppies. There's Molly, Gil, Goby, Deema, Oona, Nonny, and of course there's Bubble Puppy, a merpup. Each episode starts with Molly introducing the theme of the show, or at least trying to, but she's interrupted by Gil. From there on, we see a number of short skits and songs based around that theme that entertain and teach various subjects from maths, science and language.
Most of the extras involve songs. There are couple you can watch in "Karaoke" mode, plus you can listen to your favorite songs from the DVD individually. There is also a small game.
Bubble Guppies's first DVD is a good introduction to the show and has everything that its target audience demands. The animation is bright and colorful, the jokes should keep them laughing, and the songs are catchy. In fact, I think a lot of parents will be singing along with them. It leans on the entertainment half of Edutainment, but that shouldn't be a problem.
The first is a double-length episode on fairy tales with Mr. Grouper, the kids' teacher, telling them about different fairy tales, including one about Mean Green Witch. The mean witch turns Bubble Puppy into a frog and has plan to mass produce the formula and turn everyone into frogs. The witch's magic mirror, Nonny, tells Molly and Gil how to change him back. But to do so, they need some very special ingredients, and of course a lot of help from their friends: Oona, Deema, and Goby.
This is the origins story of Bubble Puppy and starts with Gil seeing Bubble Puppy at the pound and he instantly falls in love. But before he can get a pet, he has to learn about how to take care of a pet.
Gil and Bubble Puppy walks by a grocery store and throughout the episode the gang learns about what a grocery store is and what you buy there. The Extras
