Avengers are the Best on the Per Theater Chart

May 8, 2012

The Avengers opened on top of the per theater chart with a record-breaking average of $47,698. This is the highest ever for a number one film. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was in second place with an average of $27,298 in 27 theaters. It should have little trouble expanding. Last week's winner, Bernie, slipped to third place with an average of $17,568 in five theaters. It too should expand.

Most other new limited releases failed to find an audience. First Position opened with an average of $9,605 in five theaters, which is great for a documentary. On the other hand, Last Call at the Oasis failed to make an impact earning an average of $2,966 in three theaters. The Perfect Family was close behind with an average of $2,384 in six theaters. The rest of the new limited releases missed the Mendoza Line by a large margin. A Little Bit of Heaven only managed an average of $910 in 11 theaters while This Binary Universe was right behind with an average of $897 in two theaters. Death of a Superhero couldn't turn its 100% positive reviews into box office success, as it opened with just $345 in its lone theater. Amazingly, Meeting Evil was even worse with $181 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • To the Arctic got to $1 million over the weekend, while it might get to $2 million before the end.
  • The Raid: Redemption just made it to $4 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
