International Box Office: Avengers were Hungry for More

May 9, 2012

The Avengers crushed the competition on the international chart this week and held on so well that it became the biggest hit on the worldwide chart for 2012, overtaking The Hunger Games. Over the weekend it managed $151.5 million on 12,410 screens in 52 markets for totals of $475.8 million internationally and $683.2 million worldwide. It just pushed Forrest Gump out of the top 50 on the All Time chart and is climbing the ranks quickly. By the end of business on Monday, it had topped $700 million worldwide and will be fighting for a spot in the top 40 before the weekend begins.

The Avengers opened in first place in China with $18.07 million, while in Russia it debuted with $17.9 million, but screen counts weren't given for either market. Meanwhile, it added $13.17 million on 523 screens in the UK, for a total of $48.42 million in that market. The film earned $10.68 million on 1,017 screens in South Korea for a two-week total of $30.93 million.

The film missed the $10 million market in Brazil, but it was close with $9.30 million on 968 screens over the weekend and it now has $30.56 million in that market. Mexico was close behind with $9.23 million on 2,615 screens over the weekend for a total of $39.73 million. Australia also remained very strong with $8.35 million on 627 screens over the weekend for a total of $31.51 million after two. In Germany, it earned $6.12 million on 620 screens for a total of $18.75 million and in France it managed $5.92 million on 672 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.13 million. These results are monstrous, but weaker than it has performed in other markets. Likewise, with $2.98 million on 391 screens over the weekend in Spain, its two-week total of $14.58 million is amazing, but nowhere near record-breaking.

Amazingly, The Avengers was pushed into second place in Italy by American Reunion. It still earned $3.05 million on 644 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.29 million.

The film has a few minor openings this week and next, while it ends its international run in Japan in August. By the time it gets there, The Avengers should have $1 billion worldwide and could end the year as 2012's biggest hit at the box office. Only The Dark Knight Rises has a serious shot at beating it.

American Reunion rose to second place with $33.45 million on 4,450 screens in 45 markets for a total of $116.97 million. This is already better than average for the franchise on the international chart, and by this time next week, it might overtake American Pie 2 to be the best in the franchise internationally. It opened in first place in Italy with $3.08 million on 378 screens, but it was even more impressive in the U.K. despite having to settle for second place, as it pulled in $10.22 million on 485. It also earned second place in France with $4.70 million on 479 and in Spain with $2.77 million on 377.

Guns N' Roses rose to third place with $9.60 million over the weekend for a total of $20.06 million after two, all of which was earned in China.

Battleship fell to fourth place with $8.91 million on 6,807 screens in 52 markets for a total of $200.55 million internationally. It opens domestically next week, but since it has matched its production budget internationally, a lot of the pressure is off here. It will still have to do well here, but it won't have to be a monster hit to pay for that monster budget.

Thermae Romae remained in first place in Japan and rose to fifth place internationally with $6.85 million on 304 screens over the weekend. It now has $27.83 million overall.
