International Box Office: Madagascar is Wanted Worldwide

June 13, 2012

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted led the way on the international chart with $77.28 million on 10,877 screens in 28 markets. Its best single market was Russia, where it pulled in $9.80 million on 1,670 screens, which was easily enough for first place. It was also dominant in France with $7.96 million on 685 screens. A pair of Latin American markets also contributed to its overall success with it earning $7.53 million on 890 screens over the weekend in Brazil, for a total opening in that market of $10.85 million. In Mexico, it earned $6.98 million on 1,965. The studio is going with a spread out release schedule, so it doesn't have a whole lot of major markets in the coming weeks, while it doesn't end its international run till October when it debuts in the U.K.

Prometheus remained in second place with $38.64 million on 8,088 screens in 50 markets for a total $90.91 million. It is already close to topping the average for the Alien franchise and by this time next week should be the biggest in the franchise both internationally and worldwide. It opened in first place in Australia with $6.75 million on 467 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.18 million. On the other hand, it only managed to earn third place in South Korea with $2.12 million on 515 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.24 million. The film remained in first place in the U.K. with $4.87 million on 536 screens over the weekend for a total of $24.05 million after two. It slipped to second place in France with $2.99 million on 665 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.46 million, also after two.

Men in Black 3 fell to third place with $38.13 million on 15,482 screens in 79 markets for a three-week total of $355.00 million internationally and $490.90 million worldwide. It is now the highest grossing film in the franchise internationally, and even though it is fading fast, it still has a slim chance at doing the same worldwide.

Snow White And The Huntsman added $24.10 million on 5,070 screens in 52 markets for a total of $83.02 million after three weeks of release. It has now made more worldwide than it cost to make, and still has some major markets left to open in, so it should stick around for a while. Its best single market of the weekend was the U.K., where it added $3.44 million on 488 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.84 million after two, while in Mexico it earned $2.57 million on 1,126 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.45 million after two.

The Avengers slipped to fifth place with $8.21 million on 7,052 screens in 54 markets for a total of $824.80 million internationally and $1.397 billion worldwide. It's practically done, as it won't catch up to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II internationally, nor will it pass Titanic worldwide, it will remain at this ranking till another film passes it.

Rowdy Rathore slipped a spot to sixth with $6.00 million over the weekend giving it $24.96 million after two, the vast majority of which came from its native India.

The Dictator remained in seventh place with $4.77 million on 2,086 screens in 32 markets for a total of $70.29 million internationally. It has now made more internationally than it cost to make, so profitability is likely. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but opens in Italy on Friday and in France next week. It should have no trouble getting to $100 million internationally, while $200 million worldwide is a solid goal. Unless the film cost a ridiculous amount to advertise, that should be enough to break even by its initial push onto the home market.

Dark Shadows was right behind with $4.4 million on 3,025 screens in 51 markets over the weekend for a total of $130.0 million internationally and $203.8 million worldwide. It did cost a lot to make, but it could eventually break even. It will need help from Brazil and Mexico, where it has yet to open, and on the home market to do so.

A pair of international films rounded out the top ten. Hotaru The Movie: It's Only A Little Light In My Life opened in second place in Japan and ninth place overall with $3.95 million on 316 screens.

Finally, The Concubine earned first place in South Korea and tenth internationally with $3.42 million on 623 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.35 million.
