Weekend Estimates: Spider-Man Swings to $140 Million

July 8, 2012

The Amazing Spider-Man has continued its strong performance through the weekend, adding another $65 million to the $75 million it accumulated through Thursday. Its $140 million total is ahead of Sony's pre-release prediction, but mostly in line with independent analysis. With only Ice Age: Continental Drift opening next weekend, it will have a clear couple of weeks to pick up the teenage crowd and something over $200 million, before being blown away by The Dark Knight Rises on July 20. The weekend's other two debutantes are less amazing.

Savages will pull in a respectable $16.1 million for a per theater average of $6,000 or so. While in no way a disappointment, the film would probably have done better if not for the excellent second weekend performance by Ted, which is down just 40% to $32.6 million and tops $10,000 per theater for the second weekend running. Remarkably, that's a better performance than Brave in its third weekend. The Pixar adventure is set to fall 41% to $20.2 million and just shy of $175 million after 17 days in release.

The weekend's other wide release, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D, will post around $7.15 million for the Friday-Sunday weekend, and pull in $10.25 million in total, thanks to a Thursday release. The fangirl effect suggests that its run will be short-lived, and profitability far from assured, based on a $12 million production budget.

The final new entrant in the top 10 is To Rome with Love, which expanded into 806 theaters, but will only manage a fairly tepid $4,345 per theater average for a $3.5 million weekend. That will leave it well behind Moonrise Kingdom, which is now in its 7th week in release.

In other limited release news, Beasts of the Southern Wild should come close to earning over $20,000 per theater in its second weekend. It's playing in 19 theaters now, and will substantially increase its current $750,000 cumulative box office over the next few weeks.
