August 29, 2012

The Expendables 2 remained in first place with $25.96 million on 5,672 screens in 33 markets for a total of $66.76 million. It debuted in first place in Spain with $2.45 million on 459 screens, which is significantly more than the original made in Spain when it opened. Meanwhile, it added $3.13 million on 815 screens in Russia, for a total of $14.22 million after two weeks of release in that market. This is more than its predecessor earned in total in Russia.

Brave rose to second place with $16.4 million on 6,034 screens in 48 markets for a total of $213.3 million internationally and $443.4 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but remained in first place in the U.K. with $3.74 million on 556 screens over the weekend for a total of $20.93 million. Brave should match its domestic run on the international scene shortly, while it could have enough left in the tank to get to $500 million worldwide.

The Dark Knight Rises pushed past $500 million internationally before the weekend, while it made $16.0 million on 7,200 screens in 62 markets over the weekend. After six weeks of release, the film has made $520.0 million internationally and $942.3 million worldwide.

Total Recall remained in fourth place, again, this time with $14.34 million on 5,597 screens in 57 markets. Internationally, the film has made $80.32 million, while worldwide it has $135.50 million, which is inline with its reported production budget. The film opened in first place in Australia with $2.53 million on 338 screens, but had to settle for second place in Germany with $2.26 million on 539.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted returned to the top five thanks in part to a first place opening in Italy. Over the weekend, the film made $5.30 million on 900 screens for a total opening of $8.45 million. Overall, the film added $13.88 million on 3,113 screens in 37 markets for a total of $371.36 million internationally and $585.05 million worldwide.

Prometheus climbed into sixth place with $11.90 million on 2,188 screens in 7 markets for a total of $215.72 million internationally, while its worldwide total rose to $342.02 million. The film earned third place in Japan with $3.85 million on 768 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $9.60 million. The film didn't live up to high expectations, but it has done well enough to break even and the studio is planning a sequel.

The Bullet Vanishes rose to seven place with $10.7 million over the weekend for a total of 23.49 million after two, all of which has come from its native China.

Ted earned eighth place with $9.8 million on 2,792 screens in 31 markets for a total of $155.7 million internationally. Had it finished with that much worldwide, I would have been impressed. Its current worldwide running tally is $370.47 million, which is phenomenal. Plus, it has yet to open in France, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, and other markets. Over the weekend, its best market was the U.K. where it dipped just 18% to $2.67 million on 503 screens over the weekend for a total of $40.45 million.

Ice Age: Continental Drift placed ninth with $9.51 million on 5,786 screens in 48 markets for a total of $667.88 million in internationally and $821.38 million worldwide. It became just the 34th film to reach the $800 million market worldwide.

The Bourne Legacy fell from fifth to tenth place on the international chart with $9.2 million on 2,459 screens in 24 markets for a total of $43.6 million. The film opened in Mexico, but only managed second place with $1.12 million on 432 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.37 million. It also plummeted 65% during its second weekend in the U.K. to just $2.52 million on 507 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $12.36 million. It still has a lot of markets left to open in, but it will need help if it wants to break even any time soon.

Further down the list we run into The Avengers in 19th place with $4.02 million on 883 screens in 3 markets for totals of $874.1 million internationally and $1.492 billion worldwide. It held on rather well in Japan down 37% to $3.99 million on 845 screens over the weekend for a total of $28.21 million after two.
