International Box Office: Expendables Fight Their Way to the Top

September 13, 2012

The Expendables 2 opened in China and that helped propel it into first place with $41.62 million on 5,930 screens in 48 markets for an international total of $157.29 million. Unfortunately, as it is usually the case, no numbers for China were released, but were likely more than half the film's weekend haul. It also opened in South Korea earning third place with $1.58 million on 394 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.81 million.

The Dark Knight Rises was pushed into second place with $12.9 million on 6,420 screens in 62 markets for totals of $603.5 million internationally and $1.041 worldwide. With no markets left to debut in, the film will quickly fade from the box office chart. However, it should last long enough to climb a couple more spots on the all-time chart.

The Bourne Legacy rose to third place, also with $12.9 million, while playing on 4,016 screens in 47 markets for a total of $78.04 million. It earned first place in South Korea with $3.46 million on 588 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.06 million. It only managed fourth place in Brazil with $930,000 on 233 screens over the weekend and $1.13 million in total and in Italy with $731,000 on 305.

Brave remained in fourth place with $10.3 million on 6,205 screens in 53 markets for a total of $254.9 million internationally and $488.3 million worldwide. It managed a close third place in Italy with $1.84 million on 660 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.88 million. By the time it opens in South Korea at the end of the month, it will have $500 million worldwide.

Bayside Shakedown 4: The Final opened in first place in Japan and fifth place internationally with $10.27 million on 452 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $13.37 million.

Prometheus rose to sixth place with $9.98 million on 3,396 screens in 7 markets for a total of $249.26 million internationally and $375.69 million worldwide. It earned $6.3 million during the weekend in China for a week-long opening of $17.8 million.

Raaz 3: The Third Dimension placed seventh with $8.81 million on 2,279 screens in 4 markets. It was a big hit in its native India, but didn't do well outside of its home. For instance, it only managed 16th place in the U.K. with $117,000 on 19 screens.

Ted earned eighth place with $6.5 million on 2,304 screens in 38 markets for totals of $177.99 million internationally and $394.85 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but isn't quite done on its international run and should have no trouble getting to $200 million internationally and $400 million worldwide.

Step Up Revolution slipped a spot to ninth place with $5.75 million on 2,225 screens in 40 markets for a total of $81.02 million internationally. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but rose to first place in Germany with $1.99 million on 473 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of 6.49 million.

Total Recall fell from fifth to tenth with $5.12 million on 3,843 screens in 80 markets for an international total of $108.03 million. Getting to $100 million internationally might save face, a little bit, but the film cost way too much to make and the box office returns have been too small. The film has yet to open in Spain and Italy, but I don't think it will matter in the end.

Looking in on The Avengers, for probably the last time, it fell to 28th place with $1.8 million on 792 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for totals of $886.2 million internationally and $1.508 billion worldwide. Of the weekend haul, $1.796 million was made on 784 screens in Japan, good enough for fourth place in that market and enough to lift its running tally to $40.26 million.
