October 11, 2012

Taken 2 was just as strong internationally as it was domestically earning first place with $55.23 million on 6,319 screens in 50 markets for a total of $66.79 million. The film had a trio of first place openings in major markets, starting with the U.K. with $11.85 million on 506 screens. It also opened in first place in France with $8.29 million on 561 screens and in Australia with $7.92 million on 246. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second place in Mexico with $2.54 million on 930 screens, in Russia with $2.00 million on 750, and in Spain with $1.24 million on 320.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted rocketed from eleventh to second place adding $22.27 million on 2,856 screens in 33 markets for totals of $450.25 million internationally and $666.48 million worldwide. It dominated the German market with $8.72 million on 737 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $15.02 million. With an opening in the U.K. next weekend, the film will have no trouble getting to $500 million internationally and $700 million worldwide, thus ensuring yet another installment in the franchise.

Looper fell to third place with $14.91 million in 21 markets for a still early total of $46.0 million internationally. The film struggled in Germany missing the top five with just $939,000 on 312 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.23 million. On the other hand, it added $2.44 million on 466 screens over the weekend in the U.K. for a total of $8.69 million in that market.

Hotel Transylvania slipped a spot to fourth with $13.90 million on 3,266 screens in 22 markets for a total of $29.92 million. It debuted in first place in Brazil with $2.83 million on 441 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.45 million. It remained in first place in Mexico with $2.60 million on 1,063 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.37 million. Meanwhile, it remained in third place in Australia with $2.25 million on 452 screens for a total of $9.61 million.

Tai Chi 0 added $13.41 million in 5 markets for a total of $19.33 million after two weeks of release. Most of this likely came from China, but we have no other details.

Resident Evil: Retribution fell from second to sixth with $11.84 million on 5,541 screens in 66 markets for totals of $159.12 million internationally and $200.13 million worldwide. It likely won't match Afterlife, but it already has more than enough to ensure a profit, so the studio should be very happy. The film is a monster hit in Japan where it has made $41.05 million so far, including $2.28 million on 750 screens this past weekend.

Ted saw its weekend haul rise 15% to $11.2 million on 2,794 screens in 46 markets for totals of $232.18 million internationally and $450.52 million worldwide. The film opened in second place in Italy with $3.24 million on 436 screens. It finishes its run in France this weekend and if it is a hit there, it could reach $500 million worldwide.

Double Xposure entered the top ten for the first time with $10.49 million for a total of $13.1 million in China.

The Assassins slipped a spot to ninth with $8.96 million in 8 markets for a total of $14.46 million after two. Again, most of that likely came from China, but we don't have breakdowns by market.

Masquerade earned $5.64 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $54.07 million after four. It remained in first place in South Korea while it slipped to tenth place internationally.

While Ice Age: Continental Drift fell out of the top ten, it rose above $700 million internationally. Over the weekend it made $5.46 million on 823 screens in 4 markets for totals of $702.55 million internationally and $862.02 million worldwide.
