DVD Sales: Averages Too Bright for Dark Shadows

October 21, 2012

The Avengers remained on top of the DVD sales chart selling an additional 664,000 units and generating $12.69 million more in revenue. After two weeks of release, the film has sold 2.75 million units and generated $48.10 million in total revenue giving it fourth place on the 2012 chart. The best new release was Dark Shadows, which opened in second place with 428,000 units / $6.40 million, which is a fine start, but not a great one. How I Met Your Mother Season 7: Season Seven was next with 95,000 units / $1.89 million. This is about on par with Season Six's opening last year. The Hunger Games rose to fourth place with 80,000 units / $1.57 million for the week for totals of 5.86 million units / $102.52 million after seven weeks of release. It is padding its lead on the yearly chart and should get to six million units soon. Snow White and the Huntsman fell to fifth place with 58,000 units / $1.17 million for the week and 1.16 million units / $20.91 million after four.

The Carol Burnett Show: Carol's Favorites managed eighth place with 43,000 units / $1.61 million. I was not expecting this DVD to chart, as there were several different versions to get and I didn't think any one of them would sell enough to get to the top 30. Likewise, I wasn't expecting Downton Abbey: Season 1 & 2 Gift Set to chart, because it is a double-dip of sorts. However, the original U.K. versions of the first two seasons earned 15th place with 29,000 unit s/ $1.09 million.
