DVD Sales: Most Wanted is Indeed the Most Wanted
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted lived up to its name becoming the best selling new release and earning first place on the DVD sales chart. The film sold 944,000 units and generated $16.03 million in revenue, which was easily enough for first place. 2016: Obama's America placed second in terms of units with 301,000 units but fifth place in terms of revenue with $3.00 million. The Avengers slipped a spot to third place with 237,000 units / $4.73 million for the week, lifting its totals to 3.27 million units / $58.49 million after four weeks of release. The film is in fourth place for the year and will get to third place very soon, but that's as high as it will go. Prometheus fell to fourth place with 170,000 units / $3.06 million for the week giving it totals of 518,000 units / $8.97 million after two. That's My Boy debuted in fifth place with 114,000 units / $1.99 million. It was a disappointment at the box office and it is a disappointment on DVD.
Moonrise Kingdom debuted in eighth place with 104,000 units / $1.76 million. This is a great start for a limited release, but given its success in theaters, I was hoping for a little more than this. There was a quartet of other new releases to opened in a clump starting with Chernobyl Diaries in tenth place with 96,000 units / $1.44 million. It's hard to spin that in a positive light. I guess one could talk about the low production budget. Mad Men: Season Five opened in eleventh place with $95,000 units, but thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it earned sixth place in terms of revenue with $2.86 million. Likewise, the Madagascar Box Set only managed twelfth place in terms of units with 88,000, but it had the third most revenue with $4.38 million. Psych: Season Six earned 13th place in its with 69,000 units / $1.93 million.
