Per Theater Chart: Hyde Hits it Out of the Park

December 11, 2012

Hyde Park on the Hudson opened on top of the per theater chart with an average of $20,341 in four theaters. That is good for a limited release, but bad for a potential Awards Season contender, which is how many people saw the film prior to its release. Additionally, with weak reviews, it has little hope at long legs. Burn was much further back at $13,602, also in four theaters. Rust and Bone saw its theater count double to four, but its per theater average actually grew to $13,015. Its word-of-mouth is outstanding. Beware of Mr. Baker remained in the $10,000 club with $10,349 in one theater.

There were many other new limited releases, but none of them did particularly well. In Our Nature was merely okay with $4,378 in one theater, while The Rabbi's Cat was right behind with $4,301, also in one theater. The Fitzgerald Family Christmas earned an average of $3,450 in four theaters. Up next were a pair of documentaries, Wagner and Me and Tchoupitoulas. Both earned great reviews, but neither could find a receptive audience earning averages of $2,446 and $2,379 respectively. Waiting for Lightning missed the Mendoza Line with $1,776 in eleven theaters while Deadfall was right behind with $1,763, also in eleven theaters. Cheerful Weather for the Wedding was well back with $727 in one theater. Finally, Lay the Favorite was playing in 61 theaters, but only pulled in $21,000 for an average of $344.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Hitchcock reached $1 million over the weekend and should have no problem getting to $2 million by this time next weekend. However, its per theater average is low enough that further significant expansion is unlikely and it won't live up to prerelease expectations.
  • Talaash got to $2 million over the weekend, but I don't think it will get to $3 million.
  • As expected, Anna Karenina made it to $5 million since last week. It likely won't expand significantly past this point, but $10 million is still within reach.
