DVD Sales: New Releases Get a Black Eye
There were a quartet of new releases to reach the December 2nd edition of the DVD sales chart, but none of them were able to challenge for top spot. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and Brave were in a battle for first place with the former winning if you go by units at 637,000 to 584,000. However, the latter wins in terms of revenue at $11.65 million to $8.09 million. Brave is still a little behind in terms of total units at 4.33 million to 4.75 million; however, after just three weeks of release, it has overtaken The Lorax's 17-week total revenue at $73.45 million to $72.32 million.
The best new release of the week was Men in Black 3, which managed third place with 369,000 units / $6.27 million. This is a fine start, but not a great one. ParaNorman was right behind with 312,000 units / $5.31 million. This isn't bad, given its box office performance. Without the competition from the deep discounts, The Expendables 2 rose to fifth place with 268,000 units / $4.02 million for the week giving it a total of 600,000 units / $8.33 million after two weeks of release.
Lawless debuted in ninth place with 216,000 units / $3.67 million. That's not bad, compared to its box office run. Likewise, Sparkle struggled at the box office, so in comparison, its 15th place debut with 152,000 units / $2.58 million is a fine start.
