Blu-ray Sales: February 10th, 2013: Peter Pan Flies High

Peter Pan led a group of six new releases earning first place on the Blu-ray sales chart for the week of February 10th, 2013, with 515,000 units / $14.40 million, which is a strong opening for a catalog release.
Flight placed second with 267,000 units / $5.33 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 31%. This is good for a drama, so the studio should be happy. Hotel Transylvania fell to third place with 214,000 units / $6.41 million for the week and 835,000 units / $20.68 million after two. It should get to 1 million units soon, which is great for a kids movie. Here Comes the Boom debuted in fourth place, which was one spot higher than it managed on the DVD sales chart. It sold 111,000 units / $2.22 million during the week, for an opening week Blu-ray share of 26%, which is good for a comedy. Meanwhile, Alex Cross opened in fifth place with just 94,000 units / $1.87 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 18%, which is really low for an action / thriller.
The next best new release was Tyler Perry's Madea Gets a Job: The Play, which debuted in 12th place with 14,000 units / $239,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 2.4%. That's terrible; however, its target demographic tends to not support Blu-ray as much, while direct-to-DVD releases are also weak on Blu-ray. Deadfall debuted in 16th place with 12,000 units / $254,000 for the week. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 32%, which is very good for a limited release.
The overall Blu-ray market was mixed. There was growth compared to last week with 7% more units sold and 21% more revenue generated. However, it fell 26% when compared to last year, both in terms of units and revenue. DVD sales performed better rising by 23% in terms of units and 13% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. It fell compared to last year, but by a softer margin of 12% in terms of units and 20% in terms of revenue. This left the overall Blu-ray share down to 28% in terms of units, while in terms of revenue it was 38%, which is actually better than last week.
Next week's new releases are led by Skyfall, which should dominate both the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts. Last year's new releases were not so good. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 had its first full week and it dominated DVD and Blu-ray sales charts, but after that, there was nothing of note.
