Aliens vs. Predator vs. Princess

August 13, 2004

The box office will try to rebound this weekend with two high profile releases. Critically it's another matter as all three movies are being brutalized by reviewer after reviewer.

Alien Vs. Predator is inevitably compared with Freddy vs. Jason. And while AvP have bigger franchises backing them up, there's less hype surrounding the film. Reviews won't help the situation being well below Freddy vs. Jason's lowly score. The film is rated PG-13 rating, which is likely to give the impression that the movie has been toned down for ratings purposes. Just another factor working against this film. Even so, it should easily take top spot this weekend with $30 million, but look for a poor internal multiplier and short, short legs.

A Wednesday wedding for Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was very profitable as it took in $8.5 million. Even if the film drops 50% on Thursday, it will still beat my prediction. And with the massive increase in theatre count on Friday the film should earn $24 million over the weekend. Also look for Disney to push this film hard enough to cross the $100 million mark, cause they need this win right now.

Can Collateral beat the odds and not drop 50% during its second weekend? I would think so, but I thought the same thing about The Bourne Supremacy, so what do I know? I'll err on the side of optimism and predict $13 million this weekend.

Speaking of The Bourne Supremacy, it will drop another place this week, but it is still earning big bucks. Look for it to pull in $9 million this weekend, cutting the margin to $150 nearly in half.

The Village won't drop as badly this weekend as it did last weekend, but it still will drop close to 60% down to $7 million. That's not quite enough for it to reach $100 million over the weekend. But it should reach that milestone early next week making it the first Disney film to do so since Freaky Friday.

Missing the top five will be Yu-Gi-Oh! with just $6 million. Reviews are currently sitting at 0% positive with most critics calling it a 90 minute commercial for the card game from whence it was spawned.
