Per Theater Chart: Much Success for Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing lived up to the hype earning first place on the per theater chart with an average of $34,388 in five theaters. This is enough to suggest significant expansion, but I think it is too "art house" to expand even semi-wide. Dirty Wars opened in second place with an average of $15,876 in four theaters. This is an excellent start for a documentary. The overall box office leader, The Purge, earned third place with an average of $13,430. The final film in the $10,000 club was Before Midnight with an average of $10,123 in 52 theaters during its third weekend of release.

There were a lot of other new limited releases, almost none of which did well. Lost and Found in Armenia did well with an average of $5,537 in nine theaters. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet was well back with an average of $2,672 in two theaters. Wish You Were Here barely topped the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,358 in eleven theaters. The Prey was not as lucky with an average of $1,178 in five theaters. Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie was even weaker with an average of just $787 in five theaters. Its total was just under $4,000, which would have been a middling average. Tiger Eyes was playing in 17 theaters, which is too many, but its average was just $640, which is bad no matter what mitigating circumstances there are. Likewise, Violet and Daisy was also playing in 17 theaters, but it only managed an average of $587. Hello Herman opened in 15 theaters but only earned $5,985 for an average of $399. Finally we get to Syrup, which only managed $301 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Kon-Tiki topped $1 million over the weekend and it has a shot to get to $2 million.
• Stories We Tell also got to $1 million over the weekend and it has a slightly better chance to get to $2 million.
• Before Midnight surpassed $1 million over the weekend and it is already halfway to $2 million.
• Renoir just made it to $2 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
• Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani opened with more than $1 million and it got to $2 million just before the weekend. It will be past $3 million by the weekend.
• Frances Ha topped $2 million over the weekend and with a weekend haul of just over $500,000, getting to more milestones will be easy.
