International Box Office: Thor 2 Overtakes Original

November 20, 2013

Thor: The Dark World completed the hat trick earning first place for the third weekend in a row. It pulled in $52.5 million on 3,841 screens in 69 markets for totals of $332.8 million internationally and $477.9 million worldwide. This is already more than the original Thor finished with and possibly already enough to break even. (It depends on its global P&A budget.) The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did debut in first place in Argentina with $1.73 million on 256 screens. Its biggest market so far is China at $41.8 million, while Russia is second with $32.07 million. The film has yet to open in Italy and Japan, so it might hit a few more milestones. On the other hand, it will surrender top spot this weekend to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Gravity remained in second place with $19.4 million on 4,595 screens in 60 markets for totals of $275.2 million internationally and $515.6 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it remained in first place in the U.K. with $7.80 million on 571 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $23.65 million.

The Counselor made its first appearance in the international top ten landing in third place with $11.6 million on 3,762 screens in 40 markets for a total of $20.2 million so far. The film was in a virtual tie for first place in France with $2.64 million on 409 screens, just behind Gravity, which earned $2.68 million on 524.

Escape Plan earned fourth place with $10.8 million in 60 markets for an international total of $78.6 million. Its worldwide total is $102.7 million. This is more than it cost to make, but not enough to break even any time soon.

Fack ju Göhte remained in first place in Germany and fifth place internationally with $10.52 million on 657 screens for a two week total of $22.65 million.

Captain Phillips remained in sixth place with $8.16 million in 62 markets for totals of $66.23 million internationally and $163.73 million worldwide. Its only major market opening this weekend was in Germany, but it only managed third place there with $1.48 million on 433 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.58 million. The film performed better than expected domestically, but it hasn't been able to translate that success into international success.

Chingu 2, a.k.a., Friend 2, opened in first place in South Korea with $7.67 million on 968 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $9.70 million.

Carrie entered the international chart with $7.61 million on 2,482 screens over the weekend for an international total of $18.19 million so far. The film nearly took top spot in Russia with $4.80 million on 820 screens. On the other hand, it only managed third place in Mexico with $1.21 million on 851.

Sole A Catinelle remained in first place in Italy for the third weekend in a row with $8.60 million on 966 screens for the full week, of which $6.5 million was earned over the weekend. So far, the film has made $58.89 million.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made its international debut earning first place in Brazil with $5.26 million on 959 screens. This is more than $1 million less than Thor: The Dark World's opening a couple weeks ago, but it is $1 million more than The Hunger Games opened with. This is a good omen for this week's opening, as the original performed much better domestically than it did internationally.
