DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 31st, 2013

December 29, 2013

This Tuesday is New Years Eve, so it should come as no surprise that there are almost no new releases worth talking about. In fact, it is arguably weaker than last week, because last week had Insidious Chapter 2, which was a big hit for a September release. This week the biggest, and best, new release is Don Jon, which earned amazing reviews, but failed to make an impact at the box office. There are almost no extras on the DVD, but the Blu-ray has several exclusive extras and it is the Pick of the Week. It's not the only new release that is worth checking out, but it is close to the other new release that is worth checking out.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Himalaya: Kino Classics Remastered Edition, Nightmare City, Ninja II, Nyan Koi: Complete Collection, and Oniai: Complete Series
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases. Himalaya is the best of the bunch, but it is not exactly a mainstream film.

CBGB - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned a lot of pre-release buzz, at least compared to most limited releases. CBGB was one of the most important music venues in the world, and a film about it at its peak should have been great. However, the film's reviews were simply terrible. Dull and simplistic were two words thrown around by critics. There are also a ton a miscast cameos in the movie, which could actually be used as a fun game. At least it would distract you from the actual movie.

Don Jon - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The directorial debut for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The early buzz was amazing with some expecting it to be a contender during Awards Season. (It did pick up an Independent Spirit Award nomination.) However, it's a movie about a guy dealing with internet porn addiction. It was never going to be a mainstream hit. Fortunately, the extras are better than expected, at least on the Blu-ray, and it is a contender for Pick of the Week.

Dragon Ball Z: Season 1 - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this is the third best selling new release of the week. That shows you how slow a week this is. Granted, Dragon Ball Z is one of the most popular Anime series out there, but Anime is still a niche market. On a more important note, fans are freaking out over this Blu-ray release, because the aspect ratio is different to what the show's originally was, meaning you are missing about 25% of the screen. Also, there is a ton of DNR, which hurts the overall picture quality.

Hell Baby - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film looked like it was going to be an entertaining comedy, if not a technically good film. Its reviews were bad, however, and it is flopped in limited release. If you like the cast, many of which were part of Reno 911: Miami, then it might be worth a rental, but that's as high as I'm going to go.

InAPPropiate Comedy - Buy from Amazon
I kind of want to see this movie to see if it is truly worse than Movie 43. The reviews suggest it is.

Last Love - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Michael Caine and Clémence Poésy star in this movie. The reviews are weak with a lot of critics complaining that the film is too sentimental and moves too slowly to draw you in. If you like the two stars, or the book the film is based on, then perhaps it is worth a rental, but that's as enthusiastic as I am going to be.

Love, Marilyn - Buy from Amazon
It is a really bad when it comes to quality movies; however, this is one of a few to earn overall positive reviews. It is perhaps not the most insightful biopic out there, but if you are a fan of Marilyn Monroe, then it is worth checking out, perhaps even picking up.

Perry Mason Movie Collection Volume 1 - Buy from Amazon
I love the TV series, so I hope I can get a screener to review the TV movies. There were a lot of them.

Sanitarium - Buy from Amazon
A horror anthology that is earning mixed reviews, even among genre critics. It's not bad and the acting is better than most, but I would still only recommend a rental.

So I Can't Play H: Complete Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It is very rare for Anime releases to appear in the top ten. It is even rarer for Hentai releases to do that, but earlier when I first checked the list, this one was in the top ten. To be fair, this is more Ecchi than Hentai. And if you don't know what those terms are, don't look them up online unless you have safe browsing on.

Note: This Blu-ray makes its home market debut on the 7th of January, but I was able to get the review done early.

Star Trek: Enterprise: Season Three: Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
The first two seasons of this show were terrible, to be blunt. Did the show finally start to show some promise? Or did it continue to stink? Read our review for my opinion.

Sweetwater - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This western has a good cast, but earned bad reviews and went nowhere at the box office. It is selling well, but only because the competition is so weak.

When Calls the Heart - Buy from Amazon
A faith-based film directed by Michael Landon, Jr.. There are not a lot of reviews online, but the ones I read were positive, and the film did well enough that it is being turned into a TV series.

Wolfblood: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon
A British TV series about werewolves in high school. It recently started airing on Disney channel and the reviews have been strong. If you missed it but like supernatural shows aimed at teenagers, it is worth checking out.
