DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 29th, 2014

I is not a bad week on the home market, as we do have a $100 million hit coming out on DVD and Blu-ray. Unfortunately, this $100 million hit is Noah, which is a good movie, but not a Pick of the Week contender. Worse still, it is a very shallow week and on the first page of Amazon.com's new releases list, there are releases that on a normal week would be filler. There are a trio of Pick of the Week contenders: Finding Vivian Maier - Buy from Amazon; It Felt Like Love - Buy from Amazon; and Marty - Blu-ray Buy from Amazon. All three are worth picking up, but in the end I went with Marty as Pick of the Week.

2014 NBA Championship: Highlights - Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
Real fans want full games, not 75 minutes of highlights.

2014 NHL Stanley Cup Champions: Los Angeles Kings - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Real fans want full games, not 90 minutes of highlights.

Adventure Time: Princess Day - Buy from Amazon
A great cartoon, but I prefer the full season sets, especially since you can get them on Blu-ray.

Baby Genius & The Treasures of Egypt - Buy from Amazon
Why does this exist?

The Big Chill Criterion Collection - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
This is one of the most-beloved movies of its generation, but the reviews are merely good and not great. This is a Criterion Collection, so you know the Blu-ray release will be great.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Duel at Diablo, Herzog: The Collection (Limited Edition), Paris Blues, Problem Children: Complete Collection, Senran Kagura: Ninja Flash, Separate Tables, and Woodstock: 40th Anniversary
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases this week, but there are several that are interesting. Herzog: The Collection is very intriguing, but also very expensive.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Protector 2
There's only one 3D release this week, and it is a foreign-language import. It won't be a good week for the format.

Bubble Guppies: Get Ready for School! - Buy from Amazon
The latest DVD from this preschool skit show arrives on the home market this week. What episodes are on the DVD? And is the overall value worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Cuban Fury - Buy from Amazon: DVD of Blu-ray
I'm still waiting for the screener for this review. The critics were split on the movie, but I remain cautiously optimistic that I will like it.

Curtains - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
A director looks for an actress to play a crazy person in a film, but a real crazy person is killing all of the hopefuls. It's a teenage slasher from the 1980s, the Golden Age of these films, but this is not one of the best or most well known example of the genre. In fact, normally I would just put it in the list of Secondary Blu-ray releases, but it is already a short week.

Finding Vivian Maier - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about Vivian Maier, who, unknown to most people who knew her, was one of the great amateur photographers. The reviews were stellar and it earned more than $1 million at the box office, which is outstanding for a documentary. Definitely a contender for Pick of the Week.

It Felt Like Love - Buy from Amazon
A coming of age story about a teen girl who is jealous of her older, more sexually experienced friend. The reviews are great, but it struggled at the box office. Hopefully it will perform better on the home market.

Marty - Blu-ray Buy from Amazon
Ernest Borgnine earned an Oscar for this his performance in this movie and for good reason. I was hoping to get the screener to review, but it is late. Regardless, it is a contender for Pick of the Week.

Midsomer Murders, Set 24 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Fans of British murder mysteries know the drill. This is a great show, but the price-per-minute is really high for TV on DVD.

My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: The Keys Of Friendship - Buy from Amazon
Still one of the better animated series on TV today. It is fun for the target demographic, but also extends beyond it. That said, the full-season sets tend to be better deals.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXX - Buy from Amazon
I miss getting screeners for this show. It has been a long time since I reviewed one of these releases.

Noah - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film cost $130 million to make and there seemed to be controversy from day one. In the end, it made enough money to break even sooner rather than later, but is it also a good movie? Will it please churchgoers? Will it please those who have never read the Bible? Read our review for my opinion.

On My Way - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned high praise, especially for Catherine Deneuve's performance. On the other hand, it didn't really find an audience in theaters.

Ong-Bak Trilogy - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
Ong-Bak is the film that looked like it would propel Tony Jaa into stardom. That's not quite happened, but the film did well enough to spawn two sequels. Are the three films worth picking up? And is the box set a good deal? Read our review to find out.

The Other Woman - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film focuses on a woman, who learns her boyfriend is married, and his wife, who become friends. It's a good setup, but was the execution strong? Read our review for my opinion.

The Protector 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Combo Pack
The latest film starring Tony Jaa. His career started out great, but hasn't reached that potential since then. Does this movie come closer than most? Or is it still just going to appeal to hardcore fans of the genre? Check out our review to find out.

Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release. I previously reviewed the series when it came out on DVD, so I'm looking forward to seeing the upgrades when it comes to the Blu-ray.
