International Box Office: Apes Overtake Dinobots

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes rose to first place on the international chart with $54.8 million on 12,247 screens in 61 markets for a total of $186.7 million after three weeks of release. Worldwide, the film's running tally rose to $359.2 million, which is still about $120 million away from topping the previous installment, but at this pace, it is practically inevitable that it will get there. This week, the film earned first place in Brazil with $6.86 million on 453 screens for a total opening of $9.10 million, or a two-week total of $9.10 million, depending on what sources you look at. Likewise, it either opened in first place in Mexico, or rose to first place in Mexico earning $6.90 million on 2,392 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.99 million. The film remained in first place in the U.K. with $6.37 million on 574 screens for a two-week total of $28.90 million.

Transformers: Age of Extinction fell out of first place, but still did well adding $36.9 million over the weekend. After a month of release, the film now has $730 million internationally and $966 million worldwide and by this time next week, it will top the $1 billion milestone. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did remain in first place in Germany with $6.83 million on 664 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $21.97 million. The film is already the biggest international and worldwide hit of the year and it has yet to open in Spain and Japan.

Continent opened in first place in China and third place overall with $33 million over the weekend for a total opening of $47.14 million.

Hercules opened in fourth place with $28.7 million on 3,364 screens in 26 markets. Its biggest opening came in Russia where it made $11.42 million on 1,599 screens. It also earned first place in Australia with $3.32 million on 441 screens. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $2.46 million, also on 441 screens.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 remained in fifth place with $24.4 million in 59 markets for totals of $260.4 million internationally and $426.1 million worldwide. The film had a pair of second place openings in major markets led by South Korea with $6.09 million on 828 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.44 million. In Germany, it pulled in $5.09 million on 695 screens.

Kundo: Age of Rampant earned first place in South Korea and sixth place internationally with $16.54 million on 1,394 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $23.68 million.

Two Chinese films were back-to-back with The House That Dies earning $8.7 million over the weekend for a total of $53.00 million.

Tiny Times 3.0 was right behind with $7.2 million over the weekend in China for a total of $75.49 million after two weeks of release.

Planes: Fire & Rescue fell to ninth place with $6.9 million in 30 markets for a two-week total of $21.0 million. The film earned second place in France, but with just $1.77 million on 589 screens.

Godzilla rounded out the top ten with $6.7 million on 427 screens, all of which was earned in Japan. The film now has $299 million internationally and $499 million worldwide and will hit a trio of major milestones this week, or on the weekend at the latest.
