Key and Peele: Season Three - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray

Key and Peele stars Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele, hence the name of the show. I previously reviewed Season One of the show and loved it. Is season three just as good?

The Show

Key and Peele is a sketch comedy show, so there's no plot to talk about and discussing the individual skits ends up spoiling jokes. The basic format is the same for each episode. There's a short skit before the opening credits, and then there are alternating live studio bits between pre-filmed comedy sketches that deal with similar subjects. For instance, a talk about old drug PSAs turn into a sketch that is a parody of old 1980s PSAs. (On a side note, this skit also includes a guest appearance by Kate Micucci, one of many fun guest appearances this season.)

The topics of choice are similar to the first season, although there's more sports than I remember last time. There's a lot of politics, including racial politics, of course. But there are also other political matters dealt with, like the second amendment. Pop culture references from movies to music. I especially like their funk song. Some of the recurring characters are back, starting with Mr. Garvey, the inner city substitute teacher in the suburbs. We also see the return of Luther, Obama's anger translator, but this time we also see Michelle Obama's anger translator. There are also many fun guest appearances from Arden Myrin, Keke Palmer, David Wain, Freddie Wong, Colin Hanks, Kerri Kenny-Silver, and more.

Overall the hit to miss ratio is excellent. Unfortunately, one of the recurring bits, Metta World News is one of the least funny parts of the show. On the other hand, they are short. Even with those bits, the hit to miss ratio is strong enough that it is easy to recommend this DVD.

The Extras

Extras are not great. Disc one has seven clips from The Van and Mike Show. Disc two has a Best of Episode and five-and-a-half minutes of outtakes.

I don't have the Blu-ray to compare, but it costs less than $2 more than the DVD, which is less than a 10% premium.

The Verdict

The third season of Key and Peele is just as funny as the first one, but the extras on the DVD or Blu-ray are weaker, which hurts the overall value a little bit. It is still worth picking up, but I can't be as enthusiastic as I would like to be.
