DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 7th, 2014

October 7, 2014

The biggest release of the week is Edge of Tomorrow, which is coming out on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack. However, while the reviews are excellent, the extras are not quite up to the Pick of the Week level. The same is true of the To Be Takei DVD, but fortunately there is a winner out there. Adventure Time: Season Four is better than the previous seasons and the DVD or Blu-ray have enough extras to be the best release of the week. Meanwhile, The Grand Seduction on DVD earns the Puck of the Week for best Canadian release.

Adventure Time: Season Four - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I previously reviewed several episodes from season four, as they were released on a mixed DVD. Are the remaining episodes as good as the previous ones featured? And is the Blu-ray worth the double-dip? Read our review to find out.

American Horror Story: Season 3 - Coven - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Many say this is the best season so far, but some also say it has entered too far into guilty pleasure territory. There are not a lot of extras on the DVD or the Blu-ray, so keep that in mind when deciding if it is worth renting or buying.

Bates Motel: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This show could have been a disaster. After all, how do you remake one of the creepiest movies, one that had an amazing surprise twist or two, and turn it into a series that has to air week after week? That said, the reviews are stunning. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of extras on the DVD or Blu-ray. Still worth picking up, but not a contender for Pick of the Week.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Alien: 35th Anniversary, Billion Dollar Brain, Duck You Sucker Aka a Fistful of Dynamite, The Faculty, The First Power, Gargantia: The Complete Series, Godzilla vs. Biollante, Holiday Inn, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, The King and I, Kingdom of Heaven, Mulholland Falls, Nekromantik, The Neverending Story: 30th Anniversary, Neverending Story II: Next Chapter, Oklahoma!, Raw Force, Roger & Me, Topkapi, and True Confessions
I might be forced to buy Duck You Sucker. That's a great name and an amazing western.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Edge of Tomorrow, Ice Age Double-Feature, and Prometheus / Predator Double-Feature
There are only three 3D releases this week, and two of them are two-packs. Edge of Tomorrow is worth picking up, but the double-features are not even a good bargain.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon: Alpha & Omega 2: A Howl - Iday Adventure, Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish, Christmas Grace, Dick Van Dyke Show: Classic Christmas, Holiday Inn, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Tom & Jerry: Santa's Little Helpers, and Woody Woodpecker and Friends Holiday Favorites
Holiday Inn is clearly the best Christmas release of the week.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Extended Edition) - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This Anime series continues to be popular, even after countless episodes have been released. It is one of the few Anime releases I'm not surprised to see near the top of the best-selling new releases on Amazon.

Duck Dynasty: Season 6 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I hate reality TV.

Edge of Tomorrow - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack
This film earned some of the best reviews of the summer, but struggled to reach $100 million domestically and will need some help on the home market to break even. The DVD and the Blu-ray have just over an hour of featurettes, as well as some deleted scenes. I was hoping for an audio commentary track, but this is still worth picking up.

The Following: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The reviews really fell apart during the second season, so much so that many fans of the first season will have given up by now.

The Grand Seduction - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I'm trying to get a screener for this movie. It is a Canadian film that is a remake of another Canadian film, only the original was French. The reviews were good, but not great, but even so, it managed to pull in more than $3 million in limited release, so audiences clearly liked it.

Hemlock Grove: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Guilty pleasure, but little more.

Houdini - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Harry Houdini lived an amazing life, but there hasn't been a good biopic about him, and really only one previous attempt was more than 60 years ago. Does this mini-series get it right? Or will fans of his want to wait some more? Check out our review for my opinion.

Into the Woods - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is a great musical. However, while the DVD is being re-released this week, the Blu-ray doesn't come out till December. Wait for the Blu-ray.

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film earned good reviews and not great reviews. While it opened in limited release, which nearly always ends poorly for family films. It should perform better on the home market.

Million Dollar Arm - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An inspirational sports story that is based on real life events. Loosely based. It's not a bad movie, but it relies too much on genre clichés to be completely effective. There are enough extras to not feel bare, but not enough to be a real selling point. Call it a rental.

A Million Ways to Die in The West - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack
Seth MacFarlane wrote, directed, and starred in this film, which really didn't live up to expectations at the box office. Is it a bad movie? Or is it just too much a Seth MacFarlane film? Read our review for my opinion.

Obvious Child - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray
This limited release was saddled with the label "the abortion comedy". This might have adversely affected its box office numbers. Is this a shame? Does it deserve to find an audience on the home market? Check out our review for my opinion.

Paw Patrol: Winter Rescues - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Never heard of this show before seeing it on the list of new releases. Normally I would call it filler, but it is selling better than expected on Amazon.

Perry Mason Movie Collection: Volume 4 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release.

Rick & Morty: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest Adult Swim cartoon is about mentally unstable alcoholic scientific genius who tries to reconnect with his family, especially his 14-year old grandson. The reviews have been excellent, but I don't have a screener to review. (It's a Warner Bros. release and they never send out screeners.) There are not a lot of extras, but it is still worth picking up. A fully loaded disc could have been worth a Pick of the Week.

Sharknado 2: The Second One - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray
Sharknado 2 is an intentional B-movie, so it is not going to be good in the same way Oscar-winning movies are good. But will it be entertaining? Read our review for my opinion.

Sleeping Beauty: Diamond Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is not the first time this film has come out on Blu-ray. Is it any better than the previous Blu-ray release? If so, is it by enough to warrant a double-dip? Check out our review to find out.

Still Life: A Three Pines Mystery - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A Canadian murder mystery based on one of Louise Penny's novels. It is selling very well on Amazon.com, despite earning mixed reviews from fans of the book.

Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A documentary about Shep Gordon, who is a big talent agent, but not a household name. The reviews are great and it is worth picking up, especially if you like inside Hollywood documentaries.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete First Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Every episode for the first season was previously released on three separate DVDs. Is this anything more than those DVDs in a box? Is it worth picking up? Read our review to find out.

To Be Takei - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This documentary earned stunning reviews, but it wasn't able to find an audience in theaters. I really thought this one would do well, because George Takei has become an internet phenomenon. Hopefully it will do well on the home market.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: China Beach, The Office, and Psych
Three TV on DVD Megasets this week and all three are worth picking up.

Vikings: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I really liked season one and included it on last year's holiday gift guide. I won't be getting a screener for this season, so I don't know if the show has gotten better or worse. The reviews are certainly better. There are enough extras that it is worth picking up, while the Blu-ray has more than enough exclusives to be worth the extra money.

The Wonder Years: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Skip it. There's a Megaset coming out from Time Life. It is more expensive at the moment, but by this time next year when it is no longer exclusive, it will be a lot cheaper.
