International Box Office: Hobbit Meets More Milestones

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies poster

For the third week in a row, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies held onto first place with $89.0 million in 62 markets for totals of $405.1 million internationally and $573.6 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Australia with $10.1 million on 603 screens, while the film was particularly strong in Poland earning $5.3 million on 699. By this time next week, it should be at $500 million internationally and $700 million worldwide, which is enough to break even, but not enough to keep pace with the franchise average.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb rose to second place with $31.2 million in 40 markets for a two-week total of $49.6 million. The film opened in first place in Mexico with $5.8 million on 2,061 screens, while it only managed third place in Australia with $2.8 million on 268.

Exodus: Gods and Kings rocketed up the chart to third place with $30.9 million in 39 markets for a four-week total of $97.1 million. The film's biggest opening happened in Brazil, where it opened in first place with $6.7 million on 901. On the other hand, the film had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $4.3 million on 750 screens. It only managed third place in France ($5.3 million on 587 screens) and in Germany ($3.6 million on 597).

The Taking of Tiger Mountain earned an additional $25 million in China for a two-week total of $41 million. It if can have legs after the holidays, it will become a huge hit in its native market.

Big Hero 6 remained in fifth place with $24.7 million in 51 markets for a two-month total of $120.9 million. The film had a pair of second place openings in Brazil ($4.5 million) and in Australia ($3.2 million).

Penguins of Madagascar fell to sixth place with $16.5 million in 32 markets over the weekend for an international total of $161.3 million after seven weeks of release. Its best market over the weekend was in Mexico, where it made $4.6 million over the weekend for a total of $11.4 million after two weeks of release.

P.K. added $14.26 million over the weekend for a total of $61.43 million internationally and $69.30 million worldwide. Of this, $11.69 million was earned during its second weekend in India, lifting its running tally to $51.48 million there.

Paddington slipped a spot to eighth with $12 million in 26 markets over the weekend for a month-long total of $75 million. This includes $4 million in its native market giving it a total of $37.2 million after a month of release. This is one of the ten biggest hits in that market for 2014.

Love on the Cloud opened in ninth place with $10.0 million in 4 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $19.5 million, almost all of which was earned in China.

Ode to My Father or The International Market slipped to tenth place with $9.30 million over the weekend for a total of $27.45 million after two weeks in South Korea.
