It could be a really expensive week on the home market, as there are a number of prime releases, as well as a few potential hidden gems. The Blu-ray special releases of Glengarry Glen Ross, Jaws, and One Cut of the Dead are all worth picking up, especially if you don’t already own the film on Blu-ray. The lack of impressive extras hurt Harley Quinn: The Complete First Season and Sound! Euphonium - Our Promise: A Brand New Day, but I still pre-ordered both of them. As for Pick-of-the-Week contenders, there were three titles battling for that honor: Star Trek: Short Treks, Tokyo Godfathers, and Watchmen: An HBO Limited Series. In the end, Watchmen gets the prize, but it was a close call.

It is still too early for Awards Season contenders to come out, but that doesn’t mean there are no highly-regarded films on this week’s list. Ága, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, and Ms. Purple all have a shot at doing well at the box office.

Documentaries dominate this week’s list of limited releases with five such films appearing below. All of them are about an artist, music, or fashion, so if you are into those, you are in luck. Of these, I think Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation will do the best. Meanwhile, there are a couple of VOD titles that are also worth checking out: Avengement and Funny Story.

It is a painfully slow week for limited releases. It is so slow that I had to include all films we have theater counts for, even ones with no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, just to have enough films to talk about. Of the nine films on this week’s list, only three would be included in a normal week. Interestingly, two of these films are being released by Vertical Entertainment: The Changeover and Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz.

Next week is the first week of August and only two wide releases are coming out: Nine Lives and Suicide Squad. ... It is not going to be a competitive weekend at the box office. There are many who think Suicide Squad will earn well over $100 million during its opening weekend, so there’s little doubt it should be the target film in this week's Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Suicide Squad.
The main prize this week is a John Travolta Blu-ray Bundle that includes five Blu-rays, plus a Digital Download Code. The bundle is lead by I Am Wrath (Blu-ray Combo Pack), as well as The Forger (Blu-ray); From Paris With Love (Blu-ray); The Punisher (Blu-ray); Pulp Fiction (Blu-ray); and She’s So Lovely (Digital Downloads).
To determine the winner, we will look at the participant who came the closest without going over and the participant who came the closest without going under. Whoever is closest among those two wins the John Travolta Blu-ray Bundle. The other will win a pair of previously reviewed movies.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will be in the running for the John Travolta Blu-ray Bundle.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also be in the running for the John Travolta Blu-ray Bundle.
To determine the winner, we will look at the participant who came the closest without going over and the participant who came the closest without going under. Whoever is closest among those two wins the John Travolta Blu-ray Bundle. The other will win a pair of previously reviewed movies.
Finally, we will be choosing an entrant from the group of people who haven't won, or haven't won recently, and they will also win a Frankenprize consisting of a pair of previously reviewed movies.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

It’s a rather shallow week on the home market with the biggest release being Batman: The Killing Joke, which is a hot mess. More on that below. As for the best new release of the week, there are a handful of releases that were contenders for Pick of the Week, including Barbershop: The Next Cut, Deadline U.S.A., and Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVI. In the end, I picked Sing Street on Blu-ray for that title.

There are three or four films on this week's list vying for Awards Season Glory, but of these three, Carol has by far the best shot at picking up major nominations. In fact, it is considered a favorite for five major nominations, including Best Picture. Will it win any of these? Getting off to a fast start in limited release will help its chances.

The home market is rather slow this week with Epic the only first run release of note. (Scary Movie 5 is very unnoteworthy. Fortunately, there are some good TV on DVD releases worth checking out, like Revenge: The Complete Second Season and NCIS: Season Ten. In the end, I went with Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray Combo Pack for Pick of the Week.

There are nine films on this week's list, including four that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. It is unlikely that all of them will find success, as the competition is high. Both Terms and Conditions May Apply and The Hunt should do well, but will have trouble expanding. On the other hand, I don't think strong reviews will translate into ticket sales for Crystal Fairy. This leaves Fruitvale Station as the best bet. Then again, predicting limited release success is even harder than predicting box office numbers for wide releases.
