Theater counts: The Suicide Squad invades theaters, but Jungle Cruise remains the widest release

August 5th, 2021

The Suicide Squad

Only one wide release hits theaters this week: Warner Bros.’s The Suicide Squad. The James Gunn-directed action film, starring a plethora of Hollywood stars opens in an estimated 4,000 locations, while also being available to stream exclusively on HBO Max. Previews for the latest DCEU/Harley Quinn feature begin at 7pm on Thursday evening. The Suicide Squad has so far scored $6.7M in five international territories, including $4.5M in the United Kingdom. Last week’s widest release, Jungle Cruise dominated the box office during its opening weekend by taking in $35 million from 4,310 locations. The Walt Disney adventure film retains its 4,310 theater count from last week, taking the top spot once again this week. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Deadpool

May 9th, 2016

Deadpool

Deadpool is proof that a troubled production doesn't necessarily result in a bad product. A Deadpool film with Ryan Reynolds was first proposed more than a decade ago, while this version has been in some form of production on and off since 2010. Now that the film has finally been made, was the wait worth it? And is the DVD / Blu-ray worth picking up? ... I won't be able to answer that second question, because I only have a digital screener. This also means I have to watch the movie on my computer, which is a pain. At least I don't have to stream it. More...

2015 Preview: September

September 1st, 2015

Hotel Transylvania 2

As September begins, the box office is in a slump. August was terrible and only Straight Outta Compton escaped with its dignity intact. Fortunately, we expected August to be terrible, so the box office isn't any lower than anticipated. As for September, there are two wide releases expected to earn more than $100 million, which is better than most years. Those two films are Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Hotel Transylvania 2, both sequels. There are four other films that could become midlevel hits, so we have good depth as well. By comparison, last September there were also two $100 million hits, The Maze Runner and The Equalizer. However, there were only two midlevel hits, so it appears this year has better depth. Frankly, 2015 has such a large lead over 2014 that all it needs to do is maintain pace for the rest of the year to be considered a success. If September can help 2015 grow its lead, then the overall industry should be very happy. More...
