Home Market Releases for January 2nd, 2018

January 2nd, 2018

Lucky

This is the first Tuesday of the year, so it should be no surprise that there are not a lot of top-tier releases on this week’s list. In fact, there were so few releases worth mentioning that I had to pad the list with some films that were not selling well enough to be worth mentioning during most weeks. As for the Pick of the Week contenders, there were only two: Lucky and Battle of the Sexes. It was a close race, but in the end, I gave that title to Lucky on DVD. More...

Featured DVD Review: Lucky

January 1st, 2018

Lucky

Lucky is the directorial debut for John Carroll Lynch and the second last performance by its star, Harry Dean Stanton, who sadly passed away just before the film was released. Does the film celebrate the acting talents of Harry Dean Stanton? Does John Carroll Lynch show he’s got the talent to be a director in his first film? More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will any of the Limited Releases Get Lucky at the Box Office?

September 29th, 2017

Lucky

This week’s selection of limited releases is mixed. There are a couple of potential Oscar contenders, Lucky and Our Souls at Night, but neither is expected to be a major player at the box office. In fact, Our Souls at Night is playing on Video on Demand, so its box office potential is close to zero. Likewise, Window Horses, Bugs, and I am Another You are all earning 100% positive reviews, but none are expected to find breakout success on the art house scene. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 3rd, 2014

June 2nd, 2014

It's not a bad week on the home market, given the time of year. Lone Survivor earned more than $100 million at the box office and the Blu-ray Combo Pack is clearly worth picking up. It isn't quite Pick of the Week material, on the other hand. There are a few choices including a pair of documentaries: Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton As Himself - Buy from Amazon and Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction - Buy from Amazon. The third option was Attack on Titan, Part 1 - Blu-ray Combo Pack Regular Edition or Limited Edition. It was essentially a coin-toss between the three, but in the end I went with Plimpton! as Pick of the Week. More...

A Sampling of Limited Releases

September 13th, 2013

The list of new limited releases is shorter than it was last week, but there are more films earning Award-worthy reviews this week than there were last week. Wadjda, Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, Sample This, and Blue Caprice are all either above 90%, or very close to it. Of those four, Blue Caprice has the best shot at breakout success, but I hope they all thrive in limited release. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Last Stand

May 19th, 2013

The Last Stand was important for two reasons. Firstly, it was the first starring role for Arnold Schwarzenegger in a decade, while it was also the English-language debut for Kim Jee-woon. Unfortunately, while I wanted the film to do well, it made less in total that I predicted it would make during its opening weekend. Is it really that bad? Or should moviegoers who skipped it the first time check it out on the home market? More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Gunsmoke: Season Seven, Volume One

December 8th, 2012

For a long time, Gunsmoke was the longest running narrative show in American TV history (as opposed to news shows or sports shows). It has been a while since I reviewed the show, but in four years, only a few seasons have come out. It's going to take forever to get this series finished. Is it worth the wait for fans? Will those who are too young to have seen the show growing up get into it? More...
