National Threepeat

May 28, 2005

For the third weekend in a row National Treasure come out on top spot on the combined rental charts. It was a much closer race this week and the film fell 28% to $7.72 million in combined rentals, lifting its three week total to $30.45 million.

White Noise was the only new film to reach the top five, bringing in $6.49 million in DVD rentals and $560,000 in VHS rentals for a combined total of $7.05 million. In Good Company had the best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten, which allowed it to remain in third place with $4.92 million in combined rentals. Assault on Precinct 13 fell to fourth place with $4.66 million and is already more than half way to matching its domestic theatrical total. Rounding out the top five was the oldest movie in that group, Meet the Fockers, which added $4.28 million to its five week total of $41.18 million.

The overall rental market saw a 4.1% drop-off for the week, landing at $133.2 million. That was 3.8% lower than the same weekend last year putting 2005 1.6% lower than last year at $3.1 billion.

It was a widely different story on the DVD sales charts with Team America: World Police taking top spot ahead of White Noise and Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season finishing 1-2-3. The only holdovers in the top five were National Treasure in fourth place and Assault on Precinct 13 in fifth.

It looks like VHS sales are official dead as they are no longer being tracked by Video Business. On the other hand, TV on DVD has become so popular that it's getting its own charts. It's no surprise that Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season is the best selling TV on DVD release of all time. Coming in second was Scrubs - The Complete First Season. The Golden Girls - The Complete Second Season overcame a lackluster DVD release to snag third place. While Chappelle - Season 1 just beat out Season 2.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith continues to boost sales of the previous films. The Original Trilogy was the top seller among the group finishing in seventh place with Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace finishing in 10th and 11th places respectively. Clone Wars - Volume 1 also made the top twenty, coming in 19th place during its 9th week of release.
