Pacifier Makes some Noise on the Home Market

July 9, 2005

The Pacifier took the lead on the Rental Charts on the Home Market and was the only new release in the to five. Vin Diesel's first foray into comedies led the DVD charts with $9.48 million, the VHS charts with $1.29 million, and the combined charts with $10.77 million. It was also the best selling DVD for the week, but as usual there were no sales numbers released.

Hitch slipped to second with $8.73 million in combined rentals for the week and a $31.94 million, three-week total. The rest of the top five were separated by less than half a million dollars with Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous remaining in third place with $6.88 million and Hostage stuck in fourth with $6.68 million. Dropping to fifth was Coach Carter at $6.50 million.

The only other new release to make the top 40 was Diary of a Mad Black Woman with $5.91 million in combined rentals.

On the other hand, it was a relatively good week overall as total rentals were up $10.1% from last week at $153.2 million, the best weekly rental numbers since March. However, compared to last year the rental market is still slow, down 1.5% for the week and at $3.9 billion the year is down 2.3% year-to-date.

DVD sales had The Pacifier on top just ahead of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The rest of the top five were all holdovers: Hostage, Hitch, and Coach Carter.

Also charting were a bunch of new releases related to Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea's Class Reunion, and Meet the Browns came in 9th, 10th, and 11th places respectively while Madea's Family Reunion managed 20th place on the DVD sales chart.

The Chappelle Show Season 2 is cemented into top spot on the TV on DVD sales taking home the first place for the sixth time. Second place when to another long time release, Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season while The Chappelle Show Season 1 jumped back into the top five. Two more holdovers rounded out the top five with Bewitched - The Complete First Season finishing ahead of Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season.

The best selling new release was The Ren and Stimpy Show - Seasons Three and a Half-ish at sixth place. The only other new releases in the top ten were La Femme Nikita - The Complete Third Season and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Indecision 2004, which finished in 9th and 10th places respectively.
