Constantine has Commanding Lead as Holdovers Wilt

July 30, 2005

Constatine captured top spot on the home market taking first place on the DVD rentals, ($9.23 million); VHS rentals, ($930,000); and DVD sales, (no numbers announced.) And while the film's combined rentals of $10.17 million was a strong performance, the rest of the top five weren't so lucky.

Holdovers are showing sharper drop-offs than usual but it's unclear if this is just a momentary event or part of a long term change in the business. For instance, Million Dollar Baby fell 35% during the its second week of release to $8.11 million in combined rentals for a two-week total of $20.65 million. The only other new release to make the top five was Man of the House with $6.26 million in combined rentals, or about a third of what the film made during its entire domestic run. Hide & Seek came in fourth despite seeing its weekly take slashed by 38% to $4.84 million while The Pacifier had the best week-to-week showing losing 29% to $4.62 million.

While it didn't make it to the top five, Ice Princess did come close with $4.04 million.

Overall the total combined rentals for the week were at $141.6 million, down a mere 1.5% from last weekend, but that was still down 6.7% from last year. That leaves 2005 2.8% behind 2004 with $4.4 million for the year.

As previously stated, Constatine led the DVD sale followed by fellow newcomer, was Man of the House. Last Week's winner, Million Dollar Baby, slipped to third ahead of Ice Princess and Hitch.

The only other new releases were all from the TV on DVD category. For the first time in a long we there's a new champion on the TV on DVD sales charts as reality TV release, Laguna Beach - The Complete First Season scored a first place finish. The Chappelle Show Season 2 slipped to second place but will probably return to its familiar first place perch by next week. Rounding out the top five were three new releases led by Dead Like Me - The Complete Second Season. On a side note, the previous three releases finish in 9th, 10th, and 11th places respectively on the overall DVD sales chart. Also selling well was Lost in Space - Season 3 - Volume 2, which placed fourth on the TV on DVD charts and 19th overall. Lastly, Earth 2 - The Complete Series finished in fifth place.
