Movie Website Updates for July 1st - July 7, 2007

July 7, 2007

The list returns to its normal busy self, in fact, we have several sites making their first appearance this weekend. In addition, there were a couple of older sites that saw massive updates, including this week's winner, Charlie Bartlett - Official Site.

AVP 2: Alien Vs. Predator 2 - Official Site
Uhhh... A new title for AVP2? Or is there another expectation.

The Brave One - Official Site
Just the synopsis and the trailer. But it's a good trailer.

El Cantante - Official Site
The flash site launched this week, I think. There's just the absolute basics here, (synopsis, production notes, bios, and trailers), and there could be a bigger flash site on the way.

Cashback - Official Site
Not a whole lot of information here, but there are plenty of images.

Charlie Bartlett - Official Site
Another flash site that launched this week and it's very big, at least in a 2-dimensional sense. The site is one big screen that is panned to different places for each section, and the bits of animated transitions are a nice touch. Also adding to the overall experience are the background animations and sounds, as well as the audio clips. The content is a little light with just the regular features, (synopsis, production notes, cast & crew bios, image gallery, and trailers). Speaking of trailers, the Red Band restricted trailer is rather tame, however, the mentioning of prescription drugs in a teenage setting is enough to get it restricted. (Sometime I don't get the MPAA and their draconian ratings system.) I would like some interactive features, even if it is just a personality quiz, which should be easy to make for this movie, ("Which psychological disorder so you have?"), but there's not even a hint of that so far. Even so, the site is clearly the best of this weeks list and the winner of the medicated Weekly Website Award.

Cloverfield/1-18-08 - Official Site, Ethan was Right, and Ethan Was Wrong
The first one just has two pictures you can throw around the screen. The second has several puzzles that need to be solved and that gives you just a few clues. And the third is a rebuttal to the second. Very strange, but cool at the same time.

Death at a Funeral - Official Site
The character bios were added to the site. I really hope this movie gets a wide release, but the evidence suggests it won't.

David & Layla - Official Site
All the usual features are here, including four clips from the movie.

The Devil Came on Horseback - Official Site
The site has a lot of information on becoming active in the plight in Darfur, which is not unusual for a documentary site. But without a trailer it is too early to tell how effectively it sells the movie.

Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman - Official Site
A lot of information and more style than most documentary sites, but I'm not sure how well it sold the movie.

Freshman Orientation - Official Site
Not much here, not even the trailer.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Official Site
The first of three games were added to the site this week, but frankly I was expecting more this close to its release.

The Hunting Party - Official Site
The trailer was added this week, and it is amazing. If it wasn't for that release date, I would assume it would be a player during award season.

Introducing the Dwights - Official Site
No updates in a while but it is a good site and worth checking out.

The Invasion - Official Site
New look and the synopsis, image gallery and trailer were added to the site. There are too many similar films that have been release in the past few years, so I'm on a wait and see. The studio will have to sell me on the concept and prove that it is different enough and the execution was strong enough, but I'm still open to that possibility.

The Jane Austen Book Club - Official Site
Just the image gallery and a link to MySpace.

Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten - Official Site
A lot of information and better style than most documentary sites, but this is to be expected given the subject matter.

Joshua - Official Site
Typical Fox Searchlight website.

License to Wed - Official Site
There's not enough here to make the site stand out, and what is here doesn't sell the movie very well.

Lions For Lambs - Official Site
Just the trailer so far, which didn't do enough to sell me on the project.

No Reservations - Official Site
The bios are online and there's a section for recipes.

The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - Official Site
Not much here, but the trailer is cute. However, given the recent track record of digitally animated films released early in the year, I don't have much hope for the film's box office chances.

Rescue Dawn - Official Site
Nothing new this week, and the site has nothing that really makes it stand out.

Resurrecting the Champ - Official Site
Just the trailer so far. The trailer's not bad, but not good enough to overcome my concerns about the release date.

Shine a Light - Official Site
Just a synopsis so far.

Shoot 'Em Up - Official Site
Just the synopsis and the trailer, but I was sold the instant I found out Paul Giamatti was playing a hitman in the movie.

Skinwalkers - Official Site
Holy crap! There's been an update to the site. First time in more than a year that's there's been an update. Maybe the movie really is coming out this month. As for the new site, it has the trailer... and that's it. It's not even a good trailer.

Stardust - Official Site
Most of the rest of the residents of Stormhold were added this week leaving just two marked coming soon.

Talk to Me - Official Site
Been meaning to include this site on this list for a couple week now but it kept slipping my mind. The site has all of the usual features with several clips from the movie, a music player and a behind-the-scenes featurette. The music player has a section for clips marked coming soon, but the site is already better than most in terms of content and sells the movie well. (That said, a little more animation wouldn't hurt.)

The Transformers - Official Site
Another site where I was expecting more. Yes, I gave it the Weekly Website Award, but that was a Fanboy attack and I was hoping as the site expanding it would earn the award. However, there's little in the way of sound and animation and there's not enough interactivity to draw in surfers.

War - Official Site
Another new look, and this time we have more of the regular features. So far there are only two bios, (Devon Aoki and the director), but there is a lot of clips from the movie in the background and during the transitions.
