International Top Five - Mamma Mia Still Singing a Profitable Song

October 1, 2008

Mamma Mia! remained in top spot on the international chart with a nearly identical result to last week, earning $15.62 million on 4,152 screens in 44 markets for a total of $356.63 million internationally and $498.82 million worldwide. This includes an estimated $4.3 million on 436 screens in Russia, which was easily enough for first place. The film is also still cruising in the U.K. adding $1.10 million on 418 screens for a total of $113.40 million after nearly three months of release. At this point, one has to assume that Titanic's record is not out of reach, and that the studio might be willing to give it the extra push to put it over the top.

WALL-E climbed into second place with $11.73 million on 3,542 screens in 34 markets for a total of $212.50 million after more than three months of release. This includes $5.23 million on 690 screens in Germany, which was enough for a first place finish there, but less than Ratatouille opened with last year. Also, the film remained in first place in Australia with $2.18 million on 423 screens for a total of $7.17 million, which is about 40% more than Ratatouille made at the same point in its run. The film has a chance to reach $500 million worldwide, which is a massive number, but still lower than expected.

Tropic Thunder slipped to third place with $7.87 million on 2,016 screens in 32 markets for a total of $40.93 million. The film opened in fourth place in Spain with just $1.32 million on 323 screens. However, it added $2.43 million on 461 screens in the U.K. for a total of $9.11 million.

Righteous Kill shot up into fourth place with $5.22 million on 1,256 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $9.09 million. This includes a second place, $1.54 million opening on 362 screens in Italy and a third place, $1.39 million opening on 322 screens in the UK. I would have assumed those results would have been reversed.

Das Baader Meinhof Komplex, a.k.a., The Baader Meinhof Complex opened in second place in Germany with $4.60 million on 550 screens while it added $183,000 on 49 screens in Austria. This was just enough to land in fifth place internationally.

Look for the rest of the international results on Sunday.
