International Top Five - A Little Song and Dance Overtakes a Superhero

October 9, 2008

Thanks to an impressive opening in Italy, Mamma Mia! was able to overtake Hancock on the yearly international charts. Over the weekend the film added $14.25 million on 4,222 screens in 48 markets for an international total of $377.29 million, just ahead of the $375 million Hancock has brought in. In Italy, the film opened in first place with $2.52 million on 400 screens, while it added $1.36 million on 403 screens in the U.K. for a total of $110.14 million after thirteen weeks of release. Worldwide the film has amassed an astounding $520.01 million, and with Japan ahead, it should reach the all-time top 50 before long.

Painted Skin exploded into second place with $13.42 million on 1,282 screens in 4 markets for a total of $17.60 million after two weeks of release. The film is playing in a number of Asian markets, including its native China. Unfortunately, China is not a market that releases its box office numbers in a timely fashion.

WALL-E remained in the top five for another week in a row earning $11.58 million on 3,027 screens in 31 markets for a total of $229.55 million. The film grew during its second weekend in Germany to remain in first place with $5.86 million on 729 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.41 million. The film is now just a tiny fraction behind the final worldwide tally of Cars, and with Italy and Japan still ahead, it should have no trouble topping the final figure of Toy Story 2 as well.

Eagle Eye saw impressive growth over last week's opening as it climbed into fourth place with $8.61 million on 1,971 screens in 30 markets for a total of $15.42 million. This includes a first place, $2.06 million opening on 436 screens in Russia,

Burn After Reading opened in third place in Germany with $3.23 million on 307 screens, while it captured third place as well in Russia with $1.63 million on 252 screens. Adding in holdovers and the movie made $7.13 million on 1,028 screens in 11 markets for a total of $14.25 million, with openings in Spain, Australia, and the U.K. before the end of the month.

Look for the rest of the international charts on Sunday.
