DVD Releases for November 4, 2008

November 3, 2008

This week's list of DVD and Blu-rays feels a little shorter than usual. Either the problems I've been having with Amazon has caused me to miss a lot of releases, or this is just the calm before the storm. It won't be too long before the holiday shopping season starts, and when it does we will be flooded with DVDs and Blu-rays. As for the best of what's here, I'm going with Futurama - Bender's Game, either on DVD or Blu-ray.

Barbie in a Christmas Carol - Buy from Amazon
Combined one of the most loved Christmas stories and one of the most popular dolls and you have a DVD that is a sure hit. Fans of the franchise will be happy to add this one to their collection, even if there's little to no crossover appeal.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 2007-2008 NBA Champions - Boston Celtics, Almost Famous, Behind the Yellow Line, Blue Man Group - How to be a Megastar Live, Caligula (Amazon Exclusive), Cannibal Taboo, A Christmas Story, A Christmas Story - Ultimate Collectors Edition, The Final Countdown, Futurama - Bender's Game, Get Smart, Heroes - Season 1 & 2 Bundle - Amazon Exclusive, Holiday Fire, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Kung Fu Panda, Lonely Hearts, Monster's Ball, Planet of the Apes - 40th Anniversary Collection, Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of The Apes, Conquest of the Planet of The Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Sony Pictures Animation Bundle (Monster House, Surf's Up, Open Season), Sunrise Earth - Seaside Collection, To Live and Die in L.A., Transsiberia, Universal Soldier, Vexille
Not a great week for Blu-rays, with the biggest hit hitting Blu-ray day and date being Kung Fu Panda, but as a kids movie, it likely won't sell particularly well in High Definition. Futurama - Bender's Game is the release I'm interested in the most, while the Planet of the Apes box set is also of note. One last note on Heroes: it is actually cheaper to buy the first two seasons individually than get the Amazon exclusive bundle.

The Bourne Trilogy - Buy from Amazon
This is the second time this franchise has been released as a box set. Hopefully next time it will be released on Blu-ray.

Budd Boetticher Box Set - Buy from Amazon
A 5-disc box set featuring five films from Budd Boetticher, who was influential on the Western genre, but never really found box office success. At least not enough to become a bigger name. This set collects five of the films from the Ranown Cycle, at least those that the studio had the rights to. These are excellent films, for the most part, and the extras include audio commentary tracks on the films and a documentary about the director. Worth checking out for fans of the genre, and worth picking up for fans of the director.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon: All She Wants for Christmas, Barbie in a Christmas Carol, Christmas is Here Again, A Christmas Story (DVD), A Christmas Story (Blu-ray), A Christmas Story - Ultimate Collectors Edition (DVD), A Christmas Story - Ultimate Collectors Edition (Blu-ray), The Christmas Toy Movie, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, HIT Favorites - Snow Days, Holiday Fire (Blu-ray), How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Snow Globe, Miffy and Friends: Miffy's Christmas Tree, Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring The Rockettes, Randy Travis - Christmas on the Pecos, Shrek the Halls, Shrek the Halls with Donkey TV Plush, Shrek the Halls with Shrek TY Plush, Puss in Boots TY Plush, Gingy TY Plush. Sights and Sounds of Christmas - Classic Holiday Sing-Along, and Sights and Sounds of Christmas - The Complete Collection
Another monster list of Christmas releases, including four versions of A Christmas Story. In the ultimate gotcha for fans of that film, the physical extras for the A Christmas Story - Ultimate Collectors Edition (DVD) and A Christmas Story - Ultimate Collectors Edition (Blu-ray) are different, so if you want them all, you have to buy it twice.

Dear Me - A Blogger's Tale - Buy from Amazon
I say this as someone who reads upwards of 40 Blogs a day, mostly political blogs, I have zero interest in watching a movie about Bloggers. On the other hand, it does have Felicia Day from The Guild, so it does gain points for that.

Flashbacks of a Fool - Buy from Amazon
This film opened in limited release just a few weeks ago, but it earned rather weak reviews and disappeared almost as soon as it arrived in theaters. I'm pretty sure its star, and his upcoming movie, are the main reasons it is coming out on DVD at this time. However, I don't think it will benefit significantly from this strategy.

Futurama - Bender's Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest in the series of direct-to-DVD movies based on the popular TV series. I loved this first two, and as a D&D nerd, I'm really looking forward to this one. However, the DVD screener is late, so the spotlight review will have to wait. I will note that while there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, early word is that this is the best of the three films so far.

Get Smart - Buy from Amazon: Single-Disc DVD, Two-Disc DVD, or Blu-ray
Basing a movie on a TV show is risky, but in this case it paid off as Get Smart was able to top $100 million domestically, and matched that feat internationally. Granted, its reviews were not the best, but still strong enough that it is worth checking out. As for extras, the Single-Disc DVD has an alternate version with 20 minutes of alternate lines, but that's it. The Two-Disc DVD has the above extras, plus making of featurettes, outtakes, and more. The Blu-ray has an improved alternate version with more than twice as many alternate lines, the rest of the extras on the Two-Disc DVD version, as well as extras on the hidden references to the original series, an additional featurette, and a game. Certainly worth picking up, and the Blu-ray is worth paying extra for.

The Good Life - Buy from Amazon
Just a quick note that this DVD is coming out this week, but my screener is a little late. I hope to get the review done ASAP.

JAG (Judge Advocate General) - The Seventh Season - Buy from Amazon
Once a TV series reaches seven seasons, it is usually more profitable to close it down and sell it in syndication than it is to keep making more original episodes. So it is impressive that this show lasted three more seasons after this one. It is equally impressive how this season seems to be just as strong as previous seasons were. Its strength and stamina are impressive.

Season seven debuted the 25th of September, 2001, and yes, this season deals a lot of the aftermath of 9/11, which is both a strength and a weakness. This helps the season by giving it added dramatic weight. However, it also means there are a few more episodes that are more action oriented, and this is not a strength of the show. (I don't think they had to budget to pull off special effects.) The episodes that concentrate on criminal cases and that take place mostly in the courtroom hold my attention the most.

On a side note, in one episode, Bud 'interrogates' a suspected terrorist by discussing Star Trek. This is actually a very realistic. I've seen interviews with World War II interrogators who stated that they got more information with a cup of warm tea than any other technique. People want to talk, and if you talk to them and find a personal connection, they will talk. Guilty criminals want to confess. Smart criminals want to prove how smart they are. Terrorists who think their cause is just want to prove that to you.

Sadly, there are no extras on this 5-disc set, nor are there any subtitles. There are play all buttons and proper chapter placements.

While I prefer the spin-off, NCIS, JAG is still an excellent show, especially for fans of police procedural shows who want a military angle. Season Seven contains everything fans have come to expect, and for these people there's no reason to stop collecting the DVDs. If you haven't seen the show yet, check it out, but obviously start with Season One.

Kung Fu Panda - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Apparently this is coming out on the ninth, not the fourth. ... I don't know why, but it does explain why my DVD and Blu-ray screeners have not yet arrived. I'll do a full spotlight review when they do, but for now I will mention that the movie earned stellar reviews and was one of the biggest hits of the year so far. The movie alone makes the DVD or the Blu-ray worth picking up, while the extras will determine if it is DVD Pick of the Week material. Also coming out this week with Secrets of the Furious Five, which is not available separately. Strange.

Warning: This DVD does not come out this week and made its home market debut last week. However, the DVD screener arrived a tad late, hence the delay of the review.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - 20th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon
I can't believe this show is no longer on the air. It's not like there's a shortage of bad movies coming out these days.

The four movies presented here are...

  • First Spaceship on Venus - Season 3 - Episode 11
After finding an alien spool in the Gobi Desert, scientists determine that it came from Venus, which must have an advanced civilization, but if there is an advanced civilization, why haven't they communicated with Earth? The nations of the world send a spaceship to Venus to discover the answer to that question, but what they find there will shock the world.
Bits include the robots building their own robot, a gorilla visits the Satellite of Love, and more.
Extras on the DVD include the first part of the three-part history of MST3K, which runs just over 25 minutes and details the very early history of the show. (Initial development and the KTLA days.) There is also the original trailer for the movie.
  • Laserblast - Season 8 - Episode 6
The movie starts with a lone figure running across a desert, when a spaceship flies over head. After it lands two aliens come out and there is a short laser battle. ... And then nothing happens for the next 20 minutes or so. Even after some teenager finds one of the lasers and a necklace that causes him to mutate still not a lot happens. But the lack of plot give the trio plenty of opportunities to mock the movie, and it deserves to be mocked.
Bits include changing the diaper of a star baby, being visited by a angry space probe, and something to do with a black hole and cross-dressing.
Extras on the DVD start with the second part of the History of MST3K. This part starts with the move from KTLA to The Comedy Channel. It also includes how they added Mike Nelson to the fold, as well as the other new cast and crew members. The only other extra is the original trailer for Laserblast.
  • Werewolf - Season 10 - Episode 4
In Arizona, an archeology team unearths a skeleton that looks human, except for its wolf-like head. The natives think it part of their werewolf myth, and one of workers was injured by the remains. But while some are worried about the possibility of a werewolf running amok, others look at this opportunity for power.
Bits include Mike thinking he's James Lipton, another failed escape attempt, and multiple Ray Liotta references. ... And more cross-dressing.
Extras include the finally part of the History of MST3K, which includes when Mike Nelson replaced Joel Hodgson as the host, when Comedy Central dumped the show, the movie, Sci-Fi Channel taking over the show, and the final end. The only other extra is the original trailer for the movie.
  • Future War - Season 11 - Episode 4
The most recently released movie to ever be featured on MST3K, as it was released nearly a decade into the show's run. Cyborgs from the future use captured humans as slaves and unconvincing dinosaur puppets as trackers. When one slave escapes to Earth, trackers are sent to find him, and end up killing a lot of bad actors.
Bits include forced perspective, the many uses of water, and thanking Pearl for not killing them.
Extras on the DVD included a Comic-Con panel with the cast & crew hosted by Patton Oswald. Other extras include the original trailer for the movie, as well as several versions of the opening credit theme songs, which is a hoot to watch, but I would have liked the option to see a particular version individually as well as seeing them all in a row.
Additionally, the 20th Anniversary DVD comes with a Crow collectable figure. Unfortunately, I didn't get that to review, just the DVDs. I'm tempted to buy the DVD just to get it.

All four of these films are dreadful, but mostly dreadful in a very entertaining way. Additionally, this 4-disc set has better extras than most of the previous releases. Mystery Science Theater 3000 - 20th Anniversary Edition is easily worth picking up for fans of the show. In fact, if you've never seen the show, it's worth checking out.

NFL: Tennessee Titans - 3 Greatests Games - Buy from Amazon
You are putting out a DVD of the greatest games in NFL history and you can only find 3 games from the Titans that can be considered great. That's kind of insulting to the team.

NHL - 1- Greatest Games - Buy from Amazon: Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadians
I love these DVDs and I can't wait till they release one for the Vancouver Canucks. Of course, before that can happen the Canucks will need to play 10 great games. (It's been a slow start to the season and I'm getting a little bummed over their problems, especially after the great pre-season they had.)

Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3 - 1941-1943 - Buy from Amazon
Cartoons in chronological order is a big plus for collections like these. Meanwhile the extras are excellent and include audio commentary tracks on seven of the cartoons presented here, as well as several Popumentaries on specific shorts and an overall making of featurette. Easily worth picking up for fans of the cartoon character and a contender for DVD Pick of the Week.

Primeval - The Complete Series 1 and 2 - Buy from Amazon
A British TV series about creatures from the past and future attacking modern day London, and the agency set up to combat them. This show was created by ITV to combat the ratings juggernaut, Doctor Who. Granted, this show isn't as good as its direct competition, and at times it feels a little too much like a copy of that show. However, it is still worth checking out. Add in plenty of extras (audio commentary tracks on 10 of the 26 episodes and two making of featurettes), and it is worth picking up over just renting.

Project Runway - The Complete Fourth Season - Buy from Amazon
Reality TV, but not the soul crushing kind. Here fashion designers compete for the top prize, and it is done is way that makes sense to the profession at hand. You don't get the sense they are being put through pointless competitions. No wonder it has been nominated for a dozen Emmys.

Reaper - Season One - Buy from Amazon
I'm amazed this show wasn't canceled last season. It was a decidedly offbeat show about a slacker who finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil, so now he is forced to act as Satan's bounty hunter. (It makes more sense if you watch the pilot.) Secondly, the ratings were never great. Thirdly, the strike-shortened season killed more than a few shows. Finally, it co-stars Tyler Labine, who could have gotten a reputation for being a show killer after starring in the short lived shows, Dead Last and Invasion. It is a great show and it will hopefully build on its audience next year. As for the 5-disc DVD, it is worth picking up, even if the extras are a little light (audio commentary track on the pilot, outtakes, and deleted scenes).

The Red Balloon/White Mane - Buy from Amazon
Two short films that were released separately on DVD previously, now being released together on a DVD that costs barely more than either of the individual releases. If you waited, it is worth picking up; if you didn't, it's not worth the upgrade.

Route 66 - The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon
The first time this show hit DVD, which was not that long ago, there were issues for audio / video quality. Those problems have been fixed. Additionally, this is arguably the best season in the show's four-year run. Absolutely worth picking up for those who grabbed season one. And if you don't have season one on DVD, check it out.

Shrek the Halls - Buy from Amazon
This TV special premiered roughly this time last year and attracted more than 11 million viewers, so it was only a matter of time before it was released on DVD.

The show starts in the middle of summer with Donkey bugging Shrek about Christmas, who promptly tells him he doesn't care about Christmas. Flash forward to the day before Christmas eve and Fiona tells Shrek how excited she is, so he promises a Christmas surprise, but first he has to learn about Christmas starting with decorating, and ending with the Christmas story. Of course, the rest of the gang shows up and they all have their own Christmas stories to tell, ruining Shrek's plan for a perfect, family Christmas.

On a side note, if Christmas gets so out of hand that someone get lits on fire, you kick everyone out, and you don't apologize afterwards.

Extras on the DVD are mostly centered around songs starting with The 12 Days of Christmas featuring the penguins from Madagascar. This is a repetitive song, and the animation isn't varied enough to compensate. Deck the Halls is not as repetitive, but still rather weak. The only other real extra is Gingy's Dunking Game where you try and match Gingy with one of three Gingerbread cookies.

This TV special moves at a fast pace and there are an impressive number of jokes packed into its 21-minute running time, but sadly not enough hit their mark. It is worth checking out, but the replay value is limited. Add in very limited extras, and it is hard to recommend the Shrek the Halls DVD for anything more than a rental. Perhaps the younger members of the target audience will enjoy it more, but I still think there are better options out there.

One last note, this DVD is also available with Shrek TY Plush, a Donkey TY Plush, a Puss in Boots TY Plush, or a Gingy TY Plush.

Warning: This Blu-ray does not come out this week and made its home market debut on the 7th of October. However, the Blu-ray screener arrived late, hence the delay in the review.

Sleeping Beauty - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
The first of the classic Disney animated movies to come out in High Definition. When I heard about this movie was coming out on Blu-ray, my initial thought was, "It's nearly 50 years old. How good could it look?" Boy was I wrong.

This film looks amazing. It looks better than 90% of the Blu-rays I've seen, including most of the today's films that come out day-and-date on both DVD and Blu-ray. It's flawless. I'm stunned at how great this looks. This is as good as this film as ever looked, even if you managed to see the movie when it first came out. (Granted, the sheer size of the theatrical presentation would make a difference here. But I would still argue that the Blu-ray looks better.) The only Blu-rays that have looked better in my opinion are the Pixar releases, but coming from a digital source helps.

Moving onto the extras, there are a ton on this 3-disc set. (Although to be completely accurate, disc three is merely the movie on a standard DVD, and not a third disc of extras.) As I mentioned when I first reviewed the movie's latest home market releases, there is a massive list of extras, all of which have been ported over to the Blu-ray. I won't go over those here, but I will mention the new release. First of all, the audio commentary track as be upgraded to a Cine-Explore feature featuring picture-in-picture of the three men doing the talking (Leonard Maltin, Andreas Deja, and John Lasseter). There are also video clips from archival interviews and the like, as well as images from storyboards, behind-the-scenes, and more. I've been more than happy with every Cine-Explore I've seen so far, and I'm glad to say this one is no different. Next up is Dragon Encounter, a CG short film exploring Maleficent's dungeon. Finally, there is the standard selection of Disney BD-Live features.

Over on Disc Two, there's a new game called Maleficent Challenge where you answer a series of questions and Maleficent guesses what your are thinking. She was able to guess DVD (she actually guess a compact disc, but that's close enough). The Sound of Beauty: Restoring a Classic discusses the restoration of the sound of the film, as well as the way the sound meshes with the visuals.

Sleeping Beauty's debut on Blu-ray is amazing. It is simple as that. Not only is it worth paying extra over the DVD, it is worth upgrading your home theater to High Definition.

Soul Men - Soundtrack - Buy from Amazon
The movie comes out this Friday, but the soundtrack comes out this Tuesday. This CD has 13 songs on it featuring classic artist and songs of the genre, as well as a few performances by stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac.

Some of the highlights include...

  • Soul Music - Anthony Hamilton
There are a lot of difference sub-genres of Soul Music, and this song matches my favorite type the best, although I'm not an aficionado of the genre enough to know what sub-genre that is. (Motown, I think.)
  • I'm Your Puppet - The Real Deal
The Real Deal is the fictional band from the movie made up of John Legend, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bernie Mac. John Legend is an award-winning R&B singer, while Samuel L. Jackson, and Bernie Mac are not. But they combined well.
  • Water - Meshell Ndegeocello
A very smooth track that draws you in.
  • Boogie Ain't Nuttin' (But Getting' Down) - Samuel L. Jackson, and Bernie Mac
My personal favorite of the three songs featuring the two actors. They are clearly having fun, which helps compensate for their ... untrained talent.
  • Memphis Train - Ryan Shaw
A great beat and a retro style helps to transport listeners back to the 1960s.
  • You Don't Know What You Mean (To a Lover Like Me) - The Sugarman 3 featuring Lee Fields
I've often said my life doesn't have enough Funk in it, and this song helps rectify the situation.
Soul Men - Soundtrack has some great songs, and fans of the genre will certain find enough here worth listening to to want to pick up the CD. And perhaps fans of the movie will be encouraged to get interested in the genre.

Spin City - Season One - Buy from Amazon
Michael J. Fox burst onto the scene becoming an instant megastar with his performance as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties, not to mention his first big break in movies with Class of 1984. (And you thought I was going to say Back to the Future.) His box office drawing power waned in the 1990s and it looked like he would fade away. However, a few choice movie roles helped him land the lead in Spin City, which in turn re-launched his career. Granted, season one wasn't the best for the show, as it had to deal with some teething pains. (For instance, the Mike Flaherty / Ashley Schaeffer relationship was quickly cut from the show.) Extras on the 4-disc set include audio commentaries on a number of episodes, contemporary interviews, a vintage seminar from when the show first launched, and finally a featurette on Michael J. Fox's work to help find a cure for Parkinson's. Easily worth picking up, perhaps even a contender for DVD Pick of the Week, if you consider is part of the series as a whole and not just this season individually.

Star Wars - Buy from Amazon: Prequel Trilogy and Original Trilogy
The two trilogies from the Star Wars franchise on two different box sets. There's no reason to upgrade to these if you have the original releases, but if not, now is the perfect time to buy them, unless you want to wait for Blu-ray.

Warning: This Blu-ray does not come out this week and made its home market debut on the 21st of October. However, the Blu-ray screener arrived late, hence the delay in the review.

Sweeney Todd - The Demon Butcher of Fleet Street - Blu-Ray - Buy from Amazon
I've already reviewed the DVD when it came out earlier this year. This film was one of the HD DVDs I was looking forward to the most, but with the demise of HD DVD, it never came out. So now we finally get to see Sweeney Todd in high definition, but was it worth the wait?

No need to talk about the movie, which I loved, but I will concentrate on what makes the Blu-ray different from the DVD. First of all, this is a great looking movie, and it sounds even better. This is incredibly important, because the film's look is stylish to the extreme. The CG London is a character unto itself. Additionally, since it is a musical, the sound is equally important. I'm happy to report that in both sound and audio, it is among the best I've encountered in Blu-ray.

On the other hand, the extras are little mixed. Granted, there are a ton of extras here, including a meaty making of featurette, press conference, a look at the 'historical' roots of the Sweeney Todd legend, etc., etc., etc. However, these were all on the 2-disc DVD. They are mostly in High Definition with the press conference and one of the interview featurettes being the only exception. However, I'm quite certain these were filmed in Standard Definition to begin with. Again, a huge selection of extras, I would have liked an audio commentary track, perhaps a Picture-in-Picture track, but what we have is more than enough to make the movie a must have.

It took a little longer than originally anticipated, but we finally have Sweeney Todd - The Demon Butcher of Fleet Street in High Definition. The Blu-Ray is a must have, as was the 2-disc DVD. And even better... If you already have the film on DVD, you can get $10.00 back from a mail-in rebate. There's no reason not to upgrade.

Transsiberian - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An excellent movie that did reasonably well in limited release, but not well enough to warrant extras, or so it seems. The Blu-ray does have an extensive interview featurette, and at just $19.00, it is the better value. Regardless of what format you chose, this movie is worth picking up over just renting.

TV on DVD Releases - Full Series Sets - Buy from Amazon: Batman - The Complete Series, Foyle's War - Amazon Exclusive Bundle, Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series Collection, Get Smart - The Complete Series Gift Set, Home Movies - 10th Anniversary Set, and Wild, Wild West - The Complete Series
A few dos and don'ts for releasing Full Series Megasets on DVD. Do include physical extras like a tote bag or a book like Batman - The Complete Series and Home Movies - 10th Anniversary Set. Don't just have a new box like Wild, Wild West - The Complete Series has. And certainly don't skip the final season forcing those who want the complete series to double up of 80% of the episodes, like they did with Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series Collection, as that's a great way to get a lot of hate mail.

Warning: This DVD does not come out this week and makes its home market debut on the 9th. However, the DVD screener arrived early and I was able to get the review done this week.

War - Greatest Hits Live - Buy from Amazon
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh

Sorry, wrong band.

This DVD presents a live concert from The Grove in Anaheim, California, which took place in December of last year. This DVD presents two hours of funky, soulful, socially aware music that made the band a success for the past 4 decades. The band's biggest hits are here ("Spill the Wine (Dig that Pearl)", "Lowrider", "Why Can't We Be Friends?"). This is not a flashy concert and there are no pyrotechnics or elaborate light show, but this means the music gets to take center stage here. On a side note, when I first heard "Spill the Wine" I hated that song. I hated it with a passion. However, over the years that song has grown on me and now it is one of my favorite songs and it is in the heaviest rotations on my MP3 list. One finally note, "Spill the Wine" is not the original version, but it is cool nonetheless, while "Lowrider" is part of a long medley that ends the concert.

Extras include some nearly 12 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and just over 14 minutes of images.

I do not have the CD or Blu-ray to compare the DVD to.

I wonder if War ever wrote a song about Edwin Starr? ... Moving on. For fans of War, Greatest Hits Live is a must have, regardless of what format you decide on.

Waterworld - 2-Disc Extended Edition - Buy from Amazon
While this movie is perhaps not as bad as its reputation, it will still be remembered more for its dismal box office performance than for anything else. Considering how much money the studio must have lost, it's amazing it is being released on DVD, again, and this time in an extended edition. Granted, the extended edition is arguably better, but there are no extras on the 2-disc set and it is hard to call it anything more than a rental.

Whaledreamers - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about the aboriginal people of Australia and how whales play a major part of their religion. The film earned mixed reviews and never went anywhere at the box office. Hopefully more people will see it on DVD, even if it is just for a rental.

What We Do Is Secret - Buy from Amazon
A biopic of the punk band, The Germs. The film earned mixed reviews and went nowhere at the box office. Sadly the film doesn't capture the grit of the era which will turn off fans of the musical genre or the band more than neophytes. However, those not interested in the music will care little for this biopic, as they won't be drawn to it in the first place.

When Did You Last See Your Father? - Buy from Amazon
Jim Broadbent and Colin Firth star as father and son in this adaptation of a Blake Morrison novel. This film opened with better than average reviews, but it earned a less than stellar per theater average. It did manage to last long enough to reach $1 million in total, which I guess was enough for the studio to give the DVD an audio commentary track and some deleted scenes. Certainly worth checking out for more, and worth picking up for many.
