International Top of the Chart - Transformers Changes Things Up

June 24, 2009

In a change of pace, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen started its international run before its domestic run opening in two markets, Japan and the U.K. While it only opened two markets, those two are the two biggest markets on the international scene, and it was able to top the chart with $19.64 million on 1174 screens.

The film placed first in the U.K. with $13.76 million on 516 screens, which is 22% lower than the first film earned when it opened there back in 2007; however, the first film had the benefit of $6.4 million in previews to boost its opening weekend total. Over in Japan, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen placed second earning $5.88 million on 658 screens, which was 11% more than its predecessor made in 2007. Strangely, its predecessor opened in first place back in Japan but had to settle for second place in the U.K. So in the market where the sequel earned less, it placed higher in the charts, while the market where it improved, it placed lower on the charts.

Terminator Salvation was close behind with just under $19 million, but we will get to that film, and the rest of the multi-million dollar movies on Sunday.
