Awards Season: Big Win for Hurt

January 31, 2010

The Directors Guild of America handed out their awards over the weekend and the two theatrical categories offered a little more shock than most past nights.

The winners were...

OUSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN FEATURE FILM

OUSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DOCUMENTARY

Notes and Reactions...

  • Kathryn Bigelow's win for The Hurt Locker made her the first woman to win this award... ever. It also makes her the favorite to win the Oscar, as the DGAs have a 90% success rate as a predictor.
  • This can be seen as somewhat of a shock, only because Avatar and James Cameron have been such a massive story that all other films seem like longshots in comparison. That said, Bigelow deserved the award.
  • The Cove won again and now has to be been as the heavy, heavy favorite for the Oscar.
